The whole "toys to life" game/action figure model trailblazed by Skylanders has become one of the hottest trends around, with Disney Infinity leaping aboard the bandwagon and bringing with it some of the most popular pop-culture franchises in existence. Infinity's initial edition in 2013 included Disney/Pixar characters such as Captain Jack Sparrow, the Incredibles, and Sulley from Monsters, Inc. The 2.0 update added one of Disney's crown jewels, the Marvel superheroes.

Of course, part of the fun of the whole "toys to life" concept is that Infinity can keep adding characters to its multiple worlds, so players have an ever-evolving line-up of familiar faces to drop into their adventures. This August Infinity will venture into the Star Wars universe in Disney Infinity 3.0. But now Disney is hinting that Infinity 3.0 might also go big by going very, very small.

With Comic-Con 2015 in full swing in San Diego this week, Disney is teasing an unannounced character for the Infinity 3.0 line-up, and that tease came in the form of a literal dot. For Marvel fans, that can mean only one thing: Ant-Man. Marvel's semi-obscure shrinking hero is in the limelight next week, with his very own solo movie closing out Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The flick stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, and Evangeline Lilly, and it's the biggest big-screen gamble Marvel has made since Guardians of the Galaxy. That's a wager that obviously turned out very well for Marvel, and they're hoping Ant-Man will capture audiences' hearts half as well as Star-Lord and company did last summer.

With Ant-Man getting his big shot at success this month, there have been rumors for a while now that the tiny hero would be a part of Infinity 3.0. Disney has been coy about officially announcing Ant-Man so far, but they did confirm this week that more Marvel Infinity playsets are in the works. While the unannounced character remains officially unannounced at this point – even though it's totally Ant-Man – he or she will apparently be part of a new Marvel playset and will, of course, work with all the previously released Marvel Infinity characters.

Even without Ant-Man, Disney Infinity is set to be a monster, with the Star Wars characters certain to bring tons of new fans to Infinity this fall. It's even more exciting because the Star Wars content will encompass the Clone Wars era, the Original Trilogy era, and, eventually, the "30 years later" period set to be explored by the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens feature film. Hell, they're even bringing in characters from the popular Rebels animated series.

In addition to the Star Wars characters, Infinity 3.0 will add characters from Pixar's Inside Out, Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron Legacy, to name a few.

With Disney/Pixar, the Marvel superheroes, and now Star Wars all in play, it will be interesting to see where Infinity goes next. There are rumors of a partnership with Nintendo, which could have huge implications. Either way, Infinity will definitely have some fierce competition once Lego Dimensions releases in September, sporting an equally impressive character line-up that pulls from the DC superheroes, Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, and even Doctor Who.

Disney Infinity 3.0 is set to release August 30th for PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
