Veterans of Diablo 2 know by now that this is no average game. That was obvious from the moment it hit the shelves and had critics and players raving. Nobody had done an RPG this dark before or had loot that was this fun to collect before. The gameplay was so captivating that hardcore fans never put it down, not even to play Diablo 3, which is likely why the game is getting a fresh coat of paint.

One of the things that makes Diablo 2 distinct from the rest is that Act I is not any easier than Act 5. Sure, monsters increase in power as the game progresses, but the monsters in the first stage still have great powers and the big catch here is that most players are neither geared correctly nor leveled properly when they first encounter these monstrosities. The monsters on this are the cause being many smashed keyboards and abandoned characters.

13 Corpsefire

Diablo 2 Corpsefire Encounter With An Amazonian

It shouldn't be surprising that the first super unique monster in the game is also the easiest. His bonus, Spectral Hit, is one of the best bonuses in the game, but he's a zombie. That means even a druid who needs to learn more about his own class will have no problem dispatching him due to slow movement and attack speed.

12 Griswold

Diablo 2 Discovering The Fate Of Grimwold

While fans play other games while they wait for Diablo 2: Resurrected, they might pick up the original Diablo. That means running into a very lively Griswold. The zombie version in this game is nowhere near as strong. His glaring weakness is an attack animation that doesn't actually complete until the player can walk away before the swing lands.

11 Bone Ash

Diablo 2 Bone Ash All By Himself

Bone Ash, on paper, looks particularly challenging. With three different bonuses, he's played up to be a fear-inducing mini-boss. Unfortunately for him, he's one of a few super uniques in the game that lacks a posse. Without minions, the fight becomes very simple and even players that pick their character based on their zodiac signs will likely run into no issues dispatching him.

10 Rakanishu

Diablo 2 Rakanishu Mob Against Sorceress

The fallen are a race of beings that are scarcely memorable outside of being reminded, "It's the little creatures that die in one hit." Having one be a super unique might come off as gimmicky, but the creature holds his own. At least, for a couple of hits. He can be beefed up through one of the game's many great mods if this still seems too easy.

9 Coldcrow

Diablo 2 Fighting A Poisoned Coldcrow

The lore behind this super unique monster is that she stole a powerful dagger. Maybe the cut content from Diablo 2 is to blame for the dagger never making it onto the battlefield as she uses a bow instead. The bow is alright, but the arrows aren't fast and neither is she.

8 Pitspawn Fouldog

The concept behind this creature is sound. He launches lightning balls that also freeze players on impact. It's a tough fight for melee players, but the orbs are very easily dodged by anyone with range. Maybe they'll speed up this attack when the changes are rolled out for the remake.

7 Cow King

Diablo 2 The Cow King With Fellow Warrior Cattle

The Cow King is part of the infamous Cow Level that existed as a rumor for months before it was officially added into the game. Whether playing the worst or the best class in Diablo 2, the king is conquered with the help of lightning resistance, but due to the way rare drops work, the community actually recommends never killing this boss so the level can be replayed.

6 Treehead Woodfist

Diablo 2 Treehead Woodfist Hiding Behind A Tree

This is where the super uniques start to really flex their muscles. Treehead Woodfist is both strong and fast, giving him extra damage and making it easier for him to close the gap with ranged characters. Armored players will find this isn't too bad, but lightweights will need to be crafty to survive.

5 The Smith

Diablo 2 An Amazon Taking On The Smith

Like the last entry on this list, The Smith packs a punch. He moves about as fast even though Extra Fast is not an official modifier. He'd be higher up on this list if it weren't for his most glaring flaw: he can be evaded entirely. The items players need can be grabbed without needing to play into his melee combat fantasies.

4 Bonebreaker

Diablo 2 Bonebreaker With His Horde

Skeletons are usually completely harmless and even putting a shield on them doesn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of gamers. But Bonebreaker has all of his bases covered as the shield will reduce ranged and melee attacks while the Maric Resistant bonus takes spellcasters out of the picture. Plus, he's got the Extra Strong buff going so players that require going into melee range will be in for a bruising.

3 Blood Raven

Diablo 2 The Blood Raven Behind A Tree Of Lynched Rogues

Fan theories and in-game text both suggest that this character is the rogue from Diablo. As only the fourth super unique unit encountered, she comes too early for comfort. She doesn't have any bonuses listed, but she's ridiculously fast and has an unending amount of arrows to fire. Spellcasters won't hate her too much, but everybody else can be tracking her down and dodging her attacks for a solid ten minutes or more.

2 Bishibosh

Diablo 2 Spotting A Magic Resistant Bishibosh

Amateurs will be feeling great after defeating Corpsefire and probably feeling confident about their class of choice. The very next super unique is Bishibosh and this battle alone has resulted in more abandoned games than any other enemy in the game.

Why? Because he resurrects a massive horde of fallen. Melee characters trying to get to him will be swarmed. Ranged classes will grow tired of trying to get shots in as more meat shields spring up from the ground. In the form of a cute little shaman, the fight is nothing if not humbling.

1 Andariel

Diablo 2 Battling Andariel With The Amazon

Based on polling, Andariel and Duriel (from Act II) always compete for the hardest boss fight in the game. She's a real chore for spellcasters as she closes the gap immediately and starts thrashing with her numerous attacks.

Even armored opponents can seldom go toe-to-toe with her, especially on Hell difficulty.  This final boss of Act I hits harder than armor is ready to mitigate, forcing paladins and barbarians to use the environment and try to outmaneuver her through a game of cat-and-mouse. She's the cat, the player is the mouse, and Sanctuary is in a lot of trouble while she's alive.
