It has been several months since Warner Bros. Pictures and The Pokemon Company released the first trailer for the film adaptation of the Nintendo 3DS adventure game, Detective Pikachu, but it looks as if the companies are set to ramp up promotion for the movie as it draws nearer to theatrical release. Today, Detective Pikachu has put out its second official trailer, with the footage highlighting none other than the fan-favorite Psychic-type Pokemon known as Mewtwo.

The latest trailer for Detective Pikachu provides a brief rundown of the plot, with the titular character Detective Pikachu (voiced by Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds) teaming up with Tim Goodman (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Justice Smith) to investigate his private eye father’s mysterious disappearance. As evidenced by the movie's new trailer, viewers will be taken on a journey through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City, and introduced to a world in which Pokemon and humans live side by side.

As previously mentioned, Detective Pikachu's second official trailer also provides brief look at Mewtwo arriving on the scene in Ryme City, as the Psychic-type obliterates a gigantic Pikachu balloon that's presumably being used in a parade of some kind. In addition to Mewtwo's appearance, there are a bevy of different Pokemon seen in the footage, too, including the likes of Charizard, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Mr. Mime, and many more.

Despite the fact that Detective Pikachu has yet to even reach its theatrical release date, it appears as though Warner Bros. Pictures and The Pokemon Company are confident in the film's success, as the studios have greenlit a sequel. As it so happens, there's already a script in the works, with 22 Jump Street‘s Oren Uziel having been tapped to pen the screenplay to the forthcoming followup.

All things considered, it will definitely be interesting to see if Detective Pikachu manages to buck the persistent trend of movies based on video games typically being middling to poor translations of the source material. That said, we won't have to wait much longer to find out, as the motion picture is set to hit the big screen in just a few months from now.

Detective Pikachu releases in theaters on May 10, 2019.
