[If you're new to Destiny, welcome to Game Rant's weekly Xur post. For more info on Xur and Strange Coins make sure to read our primer here.]

While plenty of Destiny players were still visiting Xur on a regular basis in the hopes he might deliver one of the exotics to complete their collection (we're looking at you The Ram helmet!), plenty of other players had today's date circled. As the first weekend of Xur since the launch of Destiny: The Taken King, today promised to be one of the most exciting Xur arrivals since the Gjalla-day of last month.

There's been some confusion as of late about Xur's inventory and what exactly he might sell. Heading into the launch of Destiny: The Taken King there was an hourly reveal of new exotics that were said to be part of Xur's loot table, but some of those rumors have since been debunked. However, regardless of what Xur can sell or will sell, the only thing most players are focusing on is that he will have new items. So, without further ado let's look at what exotic weapon and armor Xur has on sale this week.

This week, players can find Xur in Tower North, right across from the Speaker. Head left right after spawning in, follow the stairs down, and the Speaker should be on the right.

Xur's Exotic Selection

Unfortunately, Xur has kicked off Destiny: The Taken King with a fairly lackluster selection. Yes, his exotics are 280 Light level, but two out of three of the armor pieces are old exotics, only with Year 2 abilities. He does have the cool-looking Impossible Machines Warlock gauntlets, though, whose key perk unlocks the Landfall perk on the Stormcaller class for free.

But the bigger news is that Xur does not have an exotic weapon for sale. Most assumed he would, but it turns out exotic weapons will not be part of Xur's inventory. More on that in a bit.

For a full rundown of Xur’s items and prices see the list below:

  • An Insurmountable Skullfort (Titan Helmet) – 13 Strange Coins
  • Young Ahamkara's Spine (Hunter Gauntlets) – 13 Strange Coins
  • Impossible Machines (Warlock Gauntlets) – 13 Strange Coins
  • Legacy Heavy Weapon Engram – 31  Strange Coins
  • Exotic Helmet Engram – 19 Strange Coins
  • Three of Coins - 7 Strange Coins

So, now that the confusion has cleared it appears that every week Xur will sell one piece of exotic armor for each class and an exotic engram. What we didn't know was that the engram could be either an armor engram or a weapon engram; most figured it would only be a weapon engram. It's a move that adds more chance to the proceedings, but also makes the potential for disappointment that much higher. Still, the decision will likely ensure players are interested in Xur's inventory for longer.

In addition to the usual exotic weapon and three armor pieces, Xur also has two new items in his inventory for The Taken King. One is a Legacy Engram, which will give players a chance to earn some of the Year 1 exotic weapons and armor pieces that they may not have already acquired. That also includes the Prison of Elders exotic weapons: the Queensbreaker's Bow, the Dreg's Promise, and the Lord of Wolves. The only two guns the Legacy Engram can't decrypt into are the Vex Mythoclast and the Necrochasm.

Alongside the Legacy Engram, Xur also has the Three of Coins consumable for sale. This is a completely new item for Destiny: The Taken King, but it still has a similar goal to Xur's other wares. Basically, once players activate the Three of Coins they will have a higher chance of an exotic engram dropping from an Ultra; that is, any enemy that is named and armored. Basically, any Strike boss counts as an Ultra, as well as any mission boss.

What do you hope Xur sells next week? What is the first exotic you bought from him?
