Activision Destiny Prediction Best Selling New IP

Considering it's the first non-Halo game developed by Bungie in over a decade, anticipation for Destiny is pretty high. What we've seen of the game thus far looks to be ambitious, but well within Bungie's wheelhouse, making it one of our most anticipated games of the year.

Alongside gamers' anticipation for Destiny, however, is the anticipation held by the game's publisher, Activision. As it turns out, Activision has high hopes for Bungie's forthcoming release, and they expect the game to be huge.

In Activision's quarterly investors call, CEO Bobby Kotick talked a little bit about Destiny and what his company expects the game to do sales-wise. And let us not mince words: Kotick thinks Destiny will "become the best-selling new video game IP in history."

"We expect Bungie’s Destiny, an innovative shared-world, first-person action game to be Activision Publishing’s next billion-dollar franchise."

While Kotick is no stranger to heady proclamations, his company's hopes for Destiny are not outside the realm of possibility. Although Destiny is a new IP, it comes from one of the most beloved developers working right now, and one with a stellar pedigree. Not to mention, this is the first Bungie game to be multiplatform, which further increases its reach.

Additionally, Activision's marketing team usually pull out all the stops when it comes to their major franchises. They turn each Call of Duty release into a major pop culture event and we anticipate they will do the same with Destiny.

Destiny Multiplayer Matchmaking Details

At the same time, Destiny is a risky endeavor for Activision. Though the title bears some similarities to Halo, the game's MMO-esque trappings and approach to storytelling appear to be much more free form than the Microsoft exclusive. In fact, Bungie has even come out to say that Destiny will be markedly different than their work on Halo. A quick glance at the title's gameplay in action will tell you as much.

So will Destiny sell well? Undoubtedly, but whether or not will cross the $1 billion mark or go on to become the best selling new IP in history is another issue entirely. There's a reason games like Call of Duty, Madden, and Assassin's Creed dominate sales year after year, because they're familiar experiences that gamers can count on. Sure, those annual cycles don't afford much innovation, but these games move tons of units. Destiny hopes to do both.
