Over the last week, there have been rumors and speculation in the Destiny community that the series will eventually undergo a major change. According to these rumors, future iterations of Destiny, including Destiny 3, will not feature Crucible PvP.

Rumors regarding Destiny 3 removing Crucible surfaced after several members of the Bungie development team announced their departures. Specifically, Josh Hamrick and Jon Weisnewski announced they were leaving Bungie after lengthy stints at the company, and some focus on Crucible gameplay. While it’s entirely possible that both devs were moving on to other projects because they wanted to try something fresh and new, Destiny fans tried to put a different spin on things.

Then came a rumor that claimed Destiny 3 was going to include a PvEvP zone similar to The Division’s Dark Zone. Instead of true competitive multiplayer, Destiny 3 would offer open world areas where players could experience the PvE elements of Destiny they know and also fight real players should they choose. Of course, these are only rumors at this point, but they do come from a reliable Destiny leaker.

Under normal circumstances, Bungie might just let the rumor exist and not comment on it. The studio has faced numerous Destiny 3 leaks and in most cases just let them be and focus on announcing what it has to announce. However, this one seemed to strike a chord.

So, during a Bungie Bounty stream – wherein the Destiny community tries to matchmake with Bungie devs and win an emblem – community manager Deej addressed the rumors outright.

Deej didn’t leave much wiggle room to support the rumors and speculation, saying definitively that Bungie developers are working on Crucible for current and future iterations of Destiny. He obviously wouldn’t call out Destiny 3 by name but it is widely assumed that Bungie is working on a sequel for release in 2020.

For now, Destiny fans can rest assured knowing that Crucible and PvP will remain a part of the game’s DNA moving forward. There were certainly arguments to be made in favor of dropping Crucible, like the struggle between balancing for both AI and real opponents, but Bungie is still a developer known for its multiplayer. It would have been a shame to see them drop Destiny 3 Crucible altogether.
