First ‘Dead Space 3′ Footage Released, Co-Op Confirmed

Jun 4, 2012 by

EA and Visceral Games showed off the first footage of Dead Space 3 at the publisher’s E3 2012 Press Conference earlier today. The game is set to release next February, with a co-op campaign.

As we previously reported, Dead Space 3‘s story will once again focus on series protagonist Issac Clarke, though this time he will be joined by Earthgov Sargent John Carver in the optional, co-op campaign. Carver was revealed through the graphic novel trailer released last week. The co-op will be drop-in/drop-out, and those who play solo will see different cutscenes. The game will take place on the ice planet Tau Volantis.

Ellie from Dead Space 2 will also return, and her character model seems to have undergone a few changes, though she’s still played by the same voice actor. Her eye has also been fixed, with no signs of scarring — that will most likely be explained at some point during the story.

In an onstage demo, EA also gave a look at the game’s long range combat. A cover system will not be making an appearance, however Issac can now do combat rolls and crouch behind objects to make him more effective when fighting human enemies. Issac was also seen wielding two weapons at the same time, a confirmation of the weapon mod system. How this will work was not shown, as the demo was focused on combat and co-op.

As the first screenshots confirmed, the Dead Space series is certainly starting to focus more on action than horror. While there was some skepticisim from fans over the changes, the game as a whole looks solid — even if the banter between Issac and John could get annoying at times. It’s understandable that EA would want to show some co-op gameplay, but hopefully we’ll get to see some single player footage for those worried about the changes.

Dead Space 3 will release in February 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

  1. Definitely the highlight of E3 for me, this & South Park :)

  2. this series has gone from the best horror game ever to a gears of war clone, sad days

  3. Lost Planet meets RE

    • My thoughts exactly

  4. Gears clone? Lmao, they don’t even look similar in the least bit.

  5. Well, it doesn’t look very scary, but it does still look pretty cool. I liked how the ship broke apart. This drop-in, drop-out co-op sounds interesting too. As for Ellie’s eye… didn’t Isaac lose an eye too, to that machine he used right before leaving Titan Station?

  6. Oh, I also like that you’ll apparently be fighting a few actual humans in this one instead of just all necromorphs all the time.

  7. I’m glad it’s not pretending to be scary anymore. I will be very unglad if they just arbitrarily killed Ellie.

    • Maybe killed, definitely not arbitrarily — later in the clip it sounds like Isaac and the new guy are arguing about Ellie. I’m guessing Isaac wants to divert from the marker-related goal and find/rescue Ellie, and the other guy thinks that’s a waste of time. So it serves a narrative purpose.

      • Yeah, I already played a Dead Space in which Isaac mistakenly believes his girlfriend is alive the entire game.

        • And I already played a Dead Space in which Isaac kills necromorphs.

          • Um, okay? An action game is going to have action obviously. But every Dead Space doesn’t need to have the exact same story elements recycled every time.

          • This wouldn’t be exactly the same though. Ellie’s his friend, not his girlfriend; and in the first game it was a psychological repression thing, where he already knew Nicole was dead and just “forgot,” whereas here he would have more of a reason to believe Ellie’s still alive (which I expect she will be, for the record). Plus the element of arguing about it with Carver would be new. I think that’s enough variations to make it not seem like any more of a rehash than DS2 was of DS1′s general “Unitologist idiots get everyone killed because they believe in the Marker” premise.

  8. i like how the developers are keeping all the fans in mind, some enjoy co-op, some don’t, so they are having it optional, you play single player, you have different cut-scenes, and the same goes with co-op, you’ll have different cut-scenes again, and i like co-op, and i enjoyed resident evil 5, but i didn’t agree, with capcom forcing co-op on the long-time single player fans, it’s good to see the developers of dead space not making the same mistake
