‘Dead Space 3′ Image & Teaser Trailer Confirms Frozen Planet Setting

May 30, 2012 by

Dead Space 3 was unofficially confirmed, by way of an Israeli news report, nine months ago – but, prior to the leak, EA had already been talking-up the future of their fan-favorite survival-horror franchise (as well as intentions to target a broader demographic) for months.

Once the cat Necromorph cat was out of the bag, further leaks indicated that Dead Space 3 would feature co-op and take place in a frozen wasteland. Now, a first look image of the game (coupled with Dead Space 3 graphic novel teaser trailer), along with a snapshot of the title’s frosty logo, comes semi-official confirmation that gamers will soon see their favorite systems engineer-turned-alien eradicating hero, Isaac Clarke, trekking through blizzard conditions and other chilling (both literal and figurative) environments.

As mentioned, prior reports suggested that Dead Space 3 would be set on the frozen planet (now confirmed to be Uxor) and it appears as though Isaac will once again be on clean-up detail when a shielded marker is unexpectedly exposed – turning the region’s inhabitants into Necromorphs.

Check out the full synopsis for the Dead Space 3 graphic novel tie-in for details on what to expect in the next installment:

While patrolling the planet Uxor, Earthgov Sergeant John Carver witnesses an attack on the Marker Site he guards which changes his life forever. John must now fight his way through a colony now in complete chaos as he begins to discover how important he is in fighting the Necromorph plague. This is just the start of John Carver’s saga in the Dead Space Universe.

SPOILER WARNING: If you’ve yet to finish Dead Space 2 and/or are sensitive to Dead Space 1 and 2 SPOILERS, you might want to hold-off on reading further – as, in order to make sense of this new Dead Space 3 info, we’ll need to recount where the series left-off.

The storyline depicted in the Dead Space 3 graphic novel teaser trailer (which you can check out at the top of the page), seems like a reasonable enough set-up for the next installment – especially considering the “multiple markers” reveal at the end of Dead Space 2.

Even before Dead Space 3 was officially announced (for Q1 2013), the revelation that Isaac would be jet-setting around the galaxy destroying markers certainly indicated that EA and Visceral Games intended to significantly expand the Dead Space universe. As a result, it’s now clear that, instead of revisiting the USG Ishimura, or a similarly dark and congested space ship, players should expect to encounter a variety of worlds (each with their own visual and gameplay aesthetics).

We see this kind of thing all the time (i.e. Uncharted: jungle, Uncharted 2: snow caves, Uncharted 3: desert) – but, with multiple markets and a search and destroy mission, it’s easy to imagine that the developers have ensured that each Dead Space installment will feature very different environments (and subsequently gameplay) mechanics.

While the long-rumored co-op partner (or Shadow Isaac as some reports suggest) is absent from the first official image, is it possible that the graphic novel teaser is also an introduction to Isaac’s Necromorph-killing associate – i.e. Sergeant John Carver? At this point, there’s no concrete information to go-on but the character is given a compelling enough storyline – one that could both compliment Isaac’s mission as well as create intriguing (and tense) character conflicts. Not to mention, the red coloring on Carver’s RIG would definitely make differentiating between on-screen players easy enough.

  1. FANTASTIC!!!

  2. Why is this video not working right for me? It’s uber slow, buffering a lot

  3. Got it to work. Trailer is a little vague….but still awesome

  4. I’d honestly prefer the co-op partner to be Isaac’s one-eyed girlfriend. Tough guy is kind of bland.

    • Yeah, I agree.

Still, great to have some Dead Space 3 news.

    • Tough guy is very bland-oriffic. He seems very cliche to me

      • exactly, Ellie would make a far better co-op partner, then they don’t have to try and introduce some new character who looks to be very boring

        • So of course they’re not going that route, because we need yet another generic white guy action hero. Major fail.

          • Haha right. Now if he were black…. EPIC WIN lol

Real note, I was hoping for a familiar character for co-op. It provides the opportunity of a familiar rapport to flesh out the heart and soul of the storytelling. Now we have to spend the game building an attachment to someone we don’t care very much about, rather than say building on an Ellie-Isaac partnership.

But hey, it’s early. Who knows what the final product will look like?

          • Hopefully different. I hope they name him Major Fail, actually. I might change my mind completely XD

          • Hey, for all we know that could be Issac’s cousin or some related type person to him… Besides, I’d think anybody would take the time to get to know that person if it was part of Issac’s family any day, Lol.

  5. I doubt this graphic novel will have much to do with Dead Space 3. Either way, this John Carver is gonna be a bitch compared to Isaac.

  6. So they’re mainstreaming it by increasingly action-izing it and de-horrifying it. Just as we feared. *sigh*

    • They might as well. The horror elements were too often lacking in any kind of tension-building subtlety.

      • Next thing you know we’ll have Isaac taking down necromorphs to the tune of an electric guitar. Ugh. But as for the tension-building subtlety, I thought the first game almost did a fantastic job with that. Better than the second in terms of tension and anxiety anyway. Perhaps you just have balls of steel, TaboriHK?

        • I don’t think so but part of it is that Isaac is very capable. He’s no James from Silent Hill 2, that’s for sure. That for me makes it less scary right off the bat. But you’re right the second game was WAAAY more action-y. I guess it’s a natural progression.

  7. I’m kind of upset that the game’s being mainstreamed, but there’s nothing you can do about it when a game becomes popular.

It’ll still look phenomenal and honestly, I’m just in love with the look of the Dead Space universe. It’ll be interesting to see the new environments.

Unfortunately, even if they stuck to their guns, you can only keep something scary for so long.. I mean, Isaac and the player both know what to expect, more or less, by now. New enemy types are still necromorphs, it stops being that scary. Although revisiting the Ish’ in DS2 was terrifying.

  8. This games looks like it’s headin’ down the road to becoming a mix up of Army of Two and Dead Space… Dead Space 2 was a perfect run for that kinda of setting on a Tiedman’s Station, and now they’re saying it will be on a planet..? That’s just making Dead Space 1 WAYYY out of genre. But still, I love the Dead Space games… It made me never forget my first horror game.
