‘Dead Space 3′ Rumor Suggests New Setting

Dead Space 3 New Setting

Now that the floodgates are open for Dead Space 3 rumors, after a news station unknowingly caught a glimpse of a logo, it seems like we have moved beyond the game’s existence into the discussion of the game’s storyline and setting. This newest rumor proclaims that not only will players be encountering an entirely new location, one that rivals the temperature of space, but a new big bad.

According to the rumor, Dead Space 3 would see hero Isaac Clarke crash landing on a planet called Tau Volantis that is mostly covered with ice – think Hoth from Empire Strikes Back. From there one can assume that the proverbial “s” would hit the fan, and some snowy creatures would begin to mess with Isaac’s ski plans. The same source also claims that Isaac once again meets Ellie from the first Dead Space.

While Siliconera’s unnamed source seems to provide substantial information, it’s hard to imagine a title called Dead Space being set on a singular planet. Developer Visceral Games have shown they are capable of delivering more than just a haunted spaceship milieu, but the core idea has always involved space in some capacity.

Yes, they did express interest in taking the franchise in a new direction, but most figured that involved stepping away from the marker storyline (the source does cite the new enemy as being called the “hive mind”), not abandoning the cool interstellar locations.

Furthermore, this ice planet scenario seems very similar to Capcom’s Lost Planet, which features stunningly realized snowstorms across an ice cold planet. I doubt that Dead Space 3’s snow planet will share too much in common with Lost Planet‘s, but it still seems odd that Visceral would want to tread similar territory.

Nonetheless, color us intrigued by this rumor, if only because it means more Dead Space is on the way. If you’ve yet to check out Dead Space 2, the sequel that proved the franchise was more than just a one trick pony, we highly recommend you do.

How do you feel about Dead Space 3 being set on an ice planet? Do you think it moves too far away from the qualities that made the first two titles unique and appealing?

  1. Yeah I’m not feeling the ice planet thing, glad it’s just a rumor for now. Dead Space 2 is one of my too favorites so I just hope they don’t go too left with the new direction. I’m hoping a 2012 release date.

  2. Hmm

Not good unless it involves a level or two on the planet, Dead Space is after all about Space and not setting Issac firmly on an icy planet. Visceral don’t set an entire game on a planet! Please

  3. If they do go down the different planet route its just copying Bioshock. Two games in the same underwater setting then a total revamp. Come on Viseral Games, come up with something original. The franchise deserves it.

  4. I could see having one game not directly involved with the Markers to give us a little break, but there’s way too much left to explain and explore about the Markers to abandon them completely. What are they really? What exactly is their purpose? Where do they come from? The original Black Marker is ON Earth: that just screams trouble, and is just begging to be the focus of a sequel, though not this next one I think.

  5. I’m hoping that the setting is a tropical island

    • Nice :P

  6. Hi guys!

I’m a Community Manager here at Electronic Arts, and wanted to make a quick note.

While we don’t comment on rumors, we’re thrilled to see your passion and excitement for the Dead Space franchise, and I’d encourage you to join the Dead Space community by following us on Twitter (@DeadSpace) or finding us on Facebook (http://facebook.com/deadspace).

In the mean time, stay tuned to those official channels for franchise news and updates as they become available!

  7. The Ishimura and Titan Station were a little too similar to one another for my taste; although the latter had a lot more variety, it was still primarily the same color palette and overall aesthetic. I think it’d be nice to see a setting that was starkly different from those. An ice planet is one way to go. Especially if the cold is deadly to Isaac, so you have a freezing mechanic to work with in place of the suffocation mechanic from the first two games.

  8. it has to have a marker, in the end of Dead Space 2 the voices say he just destroyed maker site 12

  9. I’m foreseeing frozen necromorph/hive mind limbs being a great addition to the dismemberment gameplay.

  10. Here’s how they should use the ice planet:
The game starts on the ice planet(but is technically mid-way through the actual story), with good ol’ Isaac holed up in a research facility, low on ammo and health, slowly bleeding/freezing to death, and surrounded by necromoprhs that don’t give a s*** about the really cold temperatures. You would then play until you run out of ammo, and it seems like Isaac is killed by necromorphs.
Then, the game flashes back to right after Dead Space 2(I think by this point Isaac could be considered a major-ass security risk, so he’s brought in by who-the-hell-ever with extreme prejudice), and jumps between locations( the escape ship, a much bigger ship that he and Ellie are loaded onto, a small space station, another ship) before it comes full circle to the ice planet(necromorphs are causing problems throughout this location-jumping trip, btw). From here, we see what happens after the opening(Isaac is saved from the brink of a horrifying death(preferably by Ellie and some new character introduced(a reformed Unitologist, hopefully)) and they travel to Earth with evidence of a necromorph-creating conspiracy, only to out that they’re a little late to try and stop it.
Sorry for potentially spoiling Dead Space 3, people.
