Dead Island Movie by Lionsgate

After players finished tearing through hordes of zombies in Dead Island: Riptide earlier this year, a cliffhanger ending left the same question on everyone's minds: There's got to be a sequel right? Four long months of speculation have passed since the release of the second installment in the action role-playing (as well as survival horror) franchise and it looks like fans finally have a bit more information on the potential follow-up.

Details are scarce at this point but it sounds as though gamers will get Dead Island 3 - eventually.

Guido Eickmeyer, creative director at Deep Silver, recently hosted a Reddit AMA. Deep Silver published the first two Dead Island games, so it's no surprise that some of the questions focused on the future of the franchise. When asked if there would be a Dead Island part three, Eickmeyer said, "I would not expect the series to stop at this point :)."

Reddit members pushed the topic and continued to ask questions about a third entry in the series or other Dead Island: Riptide add-ons and while Eickmeyer acknowledged that a Hawaiian setting for a new game "would be awesome," he was quick to remind fans that nothing has been decided yet. He did say that if another game were to be made, it would continue the non-linear, open-world tradition of the first two Dead Island titles.

Eickmeyer went on to explain, "For now, I can only ask you to wait a bit further, then some really nice things will be revealed about the future of Dead Island :)." For a Q&A that mostly focused on a zombie killing game, you might be surprised how many smiley emoticons cropped up.

Of course, there is actually plenty for the folks at Deep Silver to be smiling about. The original Dead Island launched in 2011 and over five million copies have sold at this point. The sequel (read our Dead Island: Riptide review) was also a financial success and, just a few days ago, the publisher announced a free-to-play zombie-themed multiplayer online battle arena called Dead Island: Epidemic.

Epidemic will allow three teams of players to battle for survival in the Dead Island universe. More details about the upcoming MOBA will be unveiled in a few weeks at Gamescom 2013.
