Deep Silver Creative Director Teases ‘Dead Island 3′

After players finished tearing through hordes of zombies in Dead Island: Riptide earlier this year, a cliffhanger ending left the same question on everyone’s minds: There’s got to be a sequel right? Four long months of speculation have passed since the release of the second installment in the action role-playing (as well as survival horror) franchise and it looks like fans finally have a bit more information on the potential follow-up.

Details are scarce at this point but it sounds as though gamers will get Dead Island 3 – eventually.

Guido Eickmeyer, creative director at Deep Silver, recently hosted a Reddit AMA. Deep Silver published the first two Dead Island games, so it’s no surprise that some of the questions focused on the future of the franchise. When asked if there would be a Dead Island part three, Eickmeyer said, “I would not expect the series to stop at this point :) .”

Reddit members pushed the topic and continued to ask questions about a third entry in the series or other Dead Island: Riptide add-ons and while Eickmeyer acknowledged that a Hawaiian setting for a new game “would be awesome,” he was quick to remind fans that nothing has been decided yet. He did say that if another game were to be made, it would continue the non-linear, open-world tradition of the first two Dead Island titles.

Eickmeyer went on to explain, “For now, I can only ask you to wait a bit further, then some really nice things will be revealed about the future of Dead Island :) .” For a Q&A that mostly focused on a zombie killing game, you might be surprised how many smiley emoticons cropped up.

Of course, there is actually plenty for the folks at Deep Silver to be smiling about. The original Dead Island launched in 2011 and over five million copies have sold at this point. The sequel (read our Dead Island: Riptide review) was also a financial success and, just a few days ago, the publisher announced a free-to-play zombie-themed multiplayer online battle arena called Dead Island: Epidemic.

Epidemic will allow three teams of players to battle for survival in the Dead Island universe. More details about the upcoming MOBA will be unveiled in a few weeks at Gamescom 2013.

  1. I didn’t even know there was a Dead Island 2!

I mean, I don’t know about the rest of you, but wasn’t Dead Island: Riptide supposed to be just like an in-between game for Dead Island 1 and 2? And if that’s the case, it’d be pretty funny to see just a big Dead Island 3 without a 2, unless they put just a subtitle for Dead Island 3 instead of numbering it.

But then again, it would make sense if they did the latter, cuz then they’d only have to do the same thing they did with Riptide; not much.

  2. I loved the original Dead Island but Dead Island: Riptide was at times to crowded with zombies. It was still a very enjoyable game and the ending made it obvious they planned on another continuation. Can’t wait for the next one!

  3. Im not gonna lie… but seeing this on the gens or pc.. damn i would play, i really hope they updated their engine too

  4. I think maybe we should get a Dead Island 2 before we start wondering about a 3.

    • Riptide was 2..

      • I’m pretty sure Riptide was the in-between of 1 and 2. I’m nearly certain that the developers themselves said so.

    • Dead Island Riptide was Dead Island 2. It’s a full game. I don’t think they are numbering them.

  5. No mention of Dying Light? It’s another Techland game (not published by Deep Silver, though) that has a similar look and feel with added Mirror’s Edge style parkour. It may not be set in the same universe or continue the story, but it should fill that zombie-island-shaped-hole in everyone’s lives until the next ‘proper’ Dead Island game comes around.

Also, it’s on PS4 and Xbox One, so it should be very, very pretty :)

  6. if dead island 3 comes out I hope that people can change the outfits of the main characters and be able to give a paint job on the cars and weapons.

  7. As always the first Dead Island 1 was best.
    Riptide was not so good.
Why do they always take away the best features.
I hope they realize that players know the best.

    • I liked both but the original was better but Riptide had some great aspects the original was missing like the defend your bases aspects. There should have been more introduced.

I think the end villains in the end fights both are cheesy though.

  8. They said that riptide WAS NOT 2 ? Any how what about some DLC for riptide you can change the characters clothing once ! What about Johns back story (like the Ryder White missions) and instead of the Arenas lets have ‘defend the base camps’ (I found those parts the best bits of riptide) so much more to do before dead island 2 (or 3) comes out. and please let us import are characters from riptide

    • Not sure how Riptide wasn’t Dead Island 2. It was pretty much a full game. It wasn’t an expansion or anything.

  9. YES!!! Can’t wait for the 3′rd one- but I’ll surely miss playing my favourite character Xian :/ LUV LUV LUV the DEAD ISLAND universe!!

  10. I have an idea for techland and deepsilver. shouldn’t there be tension and relationships between single player characters… right, anybody here agree? hit me up on twitter if you agree!!!!
