DC League of Super-Pets brings the famed world of DC Comics to the big screen in animated form. The Justice League are present, with a bunch of furry and heroic friends to join them. In this film, audiences are introduced to the relationship between man’s best friend, but in this case, it is Superman’s best friend: his dog from Krypton, Krypto.

The film takes a few creative liberties when it comes to the depiction of these comic characters. Mainly in part to it being a kid’s film. Krypto the Super-Dog has had a long career in DC Comics, and DC League of Super-Pets is just a pawprint of what he is capable of and what he has done in the comics.

6 Origin Story

DC League of Super-Pets Krypto Superman

In the animated film, Krypton is dying. In a desperate attempt to save their son, Lara and Jor-El send their newborn son Kal-El on a rocket ship to Earth. However, Krypto, a puppy, escapes from the parents’ arms and into the rocketship to join Kal-El on his journey to Earth. As sweet as this origin story was for Superman and his canine companion, the comics do things a little differently.

Krypto has had a few origins in the comics, considering the DC Universe has rebooted or rewritten itself a few times over the years that Krypto has been around. In the original form, Krypto was Kal-El’s dog on Krypton until Jor-El used him as a test subject to test the safety of rocket ships that would send his son to Earth. Other origins had Krypto trapped in the Phantom Zone, awaiting Kal-El’s ability to free him.

5 Bark Kent

Krypto

When Superman becomes Clark Kent, he dons a suit and a pair of glasses. Krypto, copying his owner, believes that he also needs a disguise to avoid being recognized by other dogs. For the film, Krypto dons a pair of glasses whilst on his leash and also calls himself “Bark Kent,” a play on the identity of Superman with “Clark Kent.”

When Kal-El landed on Earth, he was raised as the son of Martha and John Kent. On the Kent farm in Smallville, Krypto would find a home the farm, and enjoy his time in the fields and laying in the grass. However, to avoid a similar identity to the dog with the red cape, Krypto was named “Skip” and had a brown dye patch on his back to disguise himself.

4 Dog-El

DC League Of Super-Pets The Adventures Of Krypto And Ace

In most, if not all, of Superman’s appearances from comics to film, to TV, Superman has been seen talking to his father, Jor-El, through the Fortress of Solitude. Jor-El is not alive, but the construction of all memories and knowledge of his deceased father to help guide him into Superman and provide him with the fatherly knowledge he deserves.

For DC League of Super-Pets, Krypto discovers that his father has done the same thing. Krypto activates his collar and discovers that his father has advice for him, and his father is called Dog-El. It’s a funny scene with some heart to it, but Krypto’s father holds no importance in DC Comics and was only referenced as “Zypto” in Krypto’s family tree from 1966, yet he is present in this film as a guiding force for Krypto in his desperate hour.

3 Inner Monologue

krypto being called a hero by superman

In the film, Krypto is seen as extremely intelligent and understands Superman. To humans, the animals just sound like they are barking or making animal sounds, but to the pets, the humans are fully comprehensible. Krypto has conversations with Superman with no reply and follows the conversation of other humans without being understood himself.

In the comics, Krypto has been seen with an internal monologue but does not fully understand human language, much like real dogs. Krypto refers to Superman as “man,” but Krypto also acknowledges that he loves “man.” His internal monologue is very cute to his character and shows how this super canine is a superhero.

2 Super Friends

DC League of Super-Pets has Krypto the Super-Dog teaming up with a bunch of animals from a pet shelter. Here, Krypto teams up with another dog, a squirrel, a turtle, and a pig; all imbued with super powers, to battle a hairless guinea pig and save the captured Justice League. They form a great alliance, and become good friends throughout the film’s journey, showing Krypto that having a friend of his own is healthy for Superman and Lois Lane’s relationship.

When it comes to DC Comics, Krypto isn’t exactly best friends with a bunch of pets. Krypto is a member of the Legion of Super-Pets, which consists of super-powered animals that fight crime together In secret. The team consists of Flexi, the plastic bird, bat-hound, clay critter, bat-cow, and streaky. This team, unlike the film, was not created by Krypto.

1 Jealousy

Part of the plot for DC League of Super-Pets involves Krypto the Super-Dog becoming jealous over the relationship Superman is developing with Lois Lane. Krypto starts to react angrily out of jealousy because Superman is not spending all of his time with Krypto. After all, Lois Lane is in his way.

With Krypto being a dog, he doesn’t exhibit the usual traits than can be seen in humans. Although Krypto has super-intelligence for a dog, he does not get jealous of his owner spending his time with someone else. Krypto usually spends his own free time enjoying being a dog, whether that’s playing or catching a frisbee in space with Green Lantern.

DC League of Super-Pets is now in theaters.
