Nordic Games announces its future plans for the Darksiders franchise, with a remastered version of the original game coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U in October.

Earlier this week, a remastered version of the original Darksiders game, known as Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, leaked online. Nordic Games has since confirmed the game's existence, announcing that Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will release for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U on October 25th with a number of improvements.

Most of the improvements are focused on the game's visual presentation. Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will run at 1080p/60 frames per second on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and 30 frames per second on Wii U. Whereas the Wii U version is somewhat lesser than the other versions of the game, the PC release will actually be superior, allowing for 4K resolution and more video options on top of the other enhancements.

Otherwise, all versions of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will enjoy improved textures, better rendering and shadows, and new post processing effects. Overall, these upgrades should make for a significantly better looking take on the original Darksiders adventure, though there doesn't appear to be any new gameplay content or features in this remaster.

Even though Darksiders: Warmastered Edition doesn't have anything in the way of new gameplay experiences, veterans of the original may still be tempted to pick it up due to its low price. Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will be available for just $20, making it one of the cheapest current-gen remasters that we've seen to date.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition marks the second remaster of the Darksiders franchise that Nordic Games has put out since acquiring the IP from THQ. Last year, the studio launched Darksiders II: Definitive Edition around the same time, so when Darksiders: Warmastered Edition releases in October, the entire series will be playable on current-generation systems. Some could presume this as Nordic preparing its audience for a new entry in the series for current-gen consoles and PC, perhaps the long rumored Darksiders 3.

If Darksiders 3 does eventually release, it will be interesting to see how close it sticks to the original vision. The former creative director of Vigil Games, Joe Madureira, once shared with fans his studio's ideas for the third Darksiders, which included four-player co-op with all four horsemen as playable characters, and a story seeing players battle Lucifer himself in Hell. Darksiders 3 was an ambitious project, and had it been realized, it could have been a big hit for the now-defunct THQ.

Assuming Darksiders II: Definitive Edition sold well enough, and if this upcoming remaster of the original sells well, perhaps Darksiders 3 will become a reality. In the meantime, fans can look forward to playing the entire Darksiders saga (so far) on PC and current-gen consoles when Darksiders: Warmastered Edition launches this October.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will be available on October 25th for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U.
