While Nintendo would like to keep a relative amount of secrecy regarding the power of their forthcoming next-gen console, the Wii U, there are developers working on games for the system that are trying to ensure each version of their product gets its fair share of attention. As such it appears that Nintendo is allowing developers to speak out on their products, just a tiny bit, in order to make gamers aware the Wii U is no slouch.
For example, Darksiders II developer Vigil Games, who just so happen to be developing their forthcoming sequel for the Wii U, has come out to say that the Wii U version of Darksiders II will be “at least as good” as the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Associate Producter Jay Fitzloff further reiterates the point by saying, “The visuals will be the same.”
There were some questions early on as to just how powerful the Wii U is in comparison to the current generation of consoles, and to that point Vigil couldn’t really speak. The choice of at least in the phrasing suggests that the Wii U’s current dev kits, which should be the final ones, provide a little more power than earlier versions.
The real change, as Fitzloff explains, was in adapting Darksiders II to the Wii U’s control scheme. With the new touch tablet available to play around with, Vigil had to tread into uncharted territory and try to figure out what worked best for their game. Last year’s E3 press conference indicated that the Wii-mote would be the standard controller for the Wii U, even though the tablet is the new piece of tech, but apparently that is no longer the case.
Unfortunately, with E3 2012 literally right around the corner Nintendo doesn’t want to blow the lid off what is sure to be the centerpiece of their press conference. We’ve had early indications of what could be some launch-window titles for the console, but thus far talks of horsepower have been kept under wraps.
If Darksiders II runs a little better on the Wii U would you consider picking up that version? What advantages could you see for a game like Darksiders on Nintendo’s new console?
Darksiders II releases August 14, 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and should be out by year’s end for the Wii U.

I like the other developers more than Vigil. Vigil just want money so they won’t down play the 360 or PS3 sales of their little game.
Oh and the other companies don’t want money either? And of course they’re not going to downplay their own product. What a moronic thing to say.
I need to get my hands on one of the controllers. That will probably be the determining factor, on if I choose the Wii U, for multiplatform games. Right now, I prefer my Dualshock. If the tablet doesn’t feel right, I don’t know if the extra gameplay mechanics will be enough to seal the deal. Nintendo needs to get that tablet out there in gamer’s (i.e. MY) hands ASAP. Maybe they could have some summer festival tents or even a Nintendo tour. With the limited time between E3 and launch I don’t know if that would be possible though.
The title sounds like you guys are bashing the Wii U. It also takes what was really said out of context (guessing a PS360 fanboy wrote the article…). But Vigil said the graphics are the same on the Wii U version as on the PS360 versions. Therefore “on par” should be used instead of “at least as good.”
With every article I read about the cross-platform titles that are going to be on Wii U I get the feeling that developers are underwhelmed and that touted 2nd screen is simply making their lives more difficult.
I think we’ll all see that 2nd screen mostly used as an inventory menu, map, or other such nonsense. (I call it nonsense because how is having your map or inventory on a 2nd screen away from the action any better that having it on the TV?)
