In recent years, Crytek has become a household name among gamers due to massive releases from the Far Cry and the Crysis series. Not only that, but they are responsible for the three iterations of the CryEngine, one of the strongest game engines in the industry.
Back in February of 2009, Crytek bought Free Radical, famous for the popular first person shooter series Timesplitters. Following the purchase of Free Radical, they were renamed to Crytek UK. Since the purchase, the company has remained firmly in the shadows of its parent developer. It looks like that could be changing soon though.
In a recent interview, the CEO of Crytek, Cevat Yerli, stated that there would be a big announcement coming from their UK-based developer later this year around the time of E3. While his announcement of an announcement remains extremely vague, not even guaranteeing that it will occur at the highly-publicized gaming conference, it still has the potential to throw gamers into a frenzy. What game could they be working on? While the idea of a new IP is tantalizing, there is also the possibility of it being the return of an order franchise like the rumoured Star Wars Battlefront III or, less likely, a sequel to either of their older series’ Haze or Second Sight.
One of the major possibilities though, is the long-awaited Timesplitters 4. It’s no secret that the company wants to bring the series back, publicly talking about the possibility and leaking concept art. While the Timesplitters series may not have had the power or popularity to dominate the first person shooter market, its games offered some of the most fun gaming experiences around. Plot was never a large focus, but the series managed to create a distinct world all its own that stood apart from all the other games on the market at the time. Even though the games were extremely light-hearted, they still had some of the most polished shooter gameplay around and amazing amounts of replayability.
What do you think about Crytek UK’s announcement of an announcement? What game would you like to see them working on?
Crysis 2 releases Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
