Tomb Raider Crystal Dynamics E3 Announcement header

Another tantalizing E3 announcement on the horizon, everyone! Crystal Dynamics is set to announce a new title and have even give a sneak peek at some footage. The developer is known for the Legacy of Kain and Gex franchises, but has made waves recently with their impressive revamp of Tomb Raider in 2013.

Most recently, Crystal Dynamics created Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, an update of their critically-acclaimed but under-selling on last-gen Tomb Raider reboot for Xbox One and PS4, and now they’re ready to reveal a brand new game. As of yet, no details have been made known, but thankfully there are only a few days more to wait.

According to the GameTrailers' schedule of events, Crystal Dynamics will make the announcement between 11am and noon Pacific Time on Spike TV. The schedule doesn’t let much slip though — simply that Crystal Dynamics will “make a new game announcement exclusively on Spike — with the first footage too!” So what, exactly, could it be?

With details so light on the ground, it’s led to an awful lot of speculation. It’s already been revealed that a sequel to Tomb Raider is in the works, after an accidental leak in August of last year, and the game’s Senior Art Director has revealed that the sequel returns to Lara Croft’s globetrotting roots. With this title having been in development for a while, it may well be that Lara’s next outing could be ready for public eyes next week.

Another Tomb Raider title is not the only possibility, however. It’s been established that Crystal Dynamics has been working on a brand new IP. In fact, the developer has been building it for some time, with job listings for a then-next generation game being made in 2012, before Tomb Raider had even been released. Scot Amos, Executive Producer, said then that they were starting with a “blank page,” and continued to add they were looking to “make something new, something where we don’t already have a finger in that particular pool.”

It seems as though either of those is the most likely cause for the announcement: a new Tomb Raider or this as-of-yet unknown IP. But never rule out a dark horse. With Nosgoth, Square Enix’s multiplayer spin-off of the Legacy of Kain series, also still in development, is there space for Crystal Dynamics to return to their old hunting grounds and make another title in that franchise? That said, it’s probably safe to say that old-school fans of Crystal Dynamic games will be left waiting for that Akuji the Heartless reboot.

What do you make of this upcoming announcement? Are you excited about the possibility of a new Tomb Raider, or are you hoping for a brand new title? Are there any old Crystal Dynamics series you would like to see resurrected? Let us know in the comments.
