Counter-Strike is one of the most popular online shooters of all-time. The terrorist vs. counter-terrorist gameplay has had gamers hooked for decades. Valve’s multiplayer FPS has had longevity in spades, thanks in part to regular updates, a wealth of content, and the sheer quality of the Valve series. It’s also been a franchise that has inspired fans to create their own content. After all, Counter-Strike initially released as a fan-made mod. Valve, always known for taking an active interest in its community of fans, then took on the creators, Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess Cliffe, as employees.

That said, it’s always been rare for Valve to licence out its titles to other developers and publishers but Counter-Strike Online is one of those few instances. Valve licensed the Counter-Strike title to developer Nexon, who created the free-to-play CS Online game in 2008. After the success of sequel Counter-Strike Online 2, Nexon revealed this week that it is working on Counter-Strike once more — only this time, there are zombies in the mix.

Nexon Europe has announced that Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies will be released this Fall. The title includes “quick, aggressive and dangerous” undead enemies in a variety of gameplay modes. Fans of traditional Counter-Strike game modes will also have something to enjoy — it includes the Bomb Diffusion and Hostage Rescue modes of the original series. Unlike other Nexon Counter-Strike titles, Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies will be available on Steam.

Counter-Strike GO Release Date

According to Nexon, their zombie title “reaches out to all players.” Kenny Chang, CEO of Nexon Europe, said “both players who are new to the game, as well as those that have been logging onto classic FPC games for years, will be surprised with the new action it offers.”

Valve’s Doug Lombardi also stated that Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies shows the success Nexon has has with the franchise. “Today we are announcing the latest creation from Nexon in the Counter-Strike world, one that builds upon years of success in developing Counter-Strike Online for Asia,” said Lombardi. “This title showcases that work in new zombie and classic form.”

It’s not the only Valve franchise that’s been worked on by other companies, either. There is also the upcoming arcade title Left 4 Dead: Survivors. Valve has made Survivors in conjunction with Square Enix, after losing developer Turtle Rock to creative differences.

Zombies are not entirely new to the Counter-Strike series. Fan-made content has included the hungry undead before, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive featured an updated version of the popular Zombie Mod, with Valve working closely with the mod team at Plague Fest. And of course, Valve has plenty of experience with zombies themselves, given their history with the Left 4 Dead series. It remains to be seen how this formal introduction of zombies to the series will work.

Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies will release for PC via Steam this Fall.
