Cool New Mods: Play ‘Dishonored’ in ‘Skyrim’ and Go Co-op in ‘Half-Life’

One of the main attractions of PC gaming is the availability of hundreds of different mods for games. Whether you want to remove an aspect of the gameplay that you found annoying, tweak the graphics for a prettier gaming expereince, or simply want to play a character who walks around in nothing but a loincloth with the word “Juicy” on the butt, there’s likely a tech-savvy gamer out there who has already brought your dream to life.

Since many of the mods for games can be almost as entertaining as the games themselves, Game Rant always likes to highlight the best of the mods for various PC games. This week, two particularly intriguing mods for two very different games have come into the spotlight, and each is definitely worth a closer look.

First up, the best of both worlds from two great Bethesda Softworks games comes together in Gifts of the Outsider, a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from mod author Madrilous, which introduces a brand new quest based on the story and magic of Arkane Studios’ stealth game Dishonored. The bar for Skyrim mods has already been set very high, with masterpieces like Posh Mudcrabs and Call of Trainwiz, but Gifts of the Outsider looks like an outstanding example with significant amount of effort and talent put into it. Watch the gameplay video above to get a better idea of what to expect.

Skyrim meets Dishonored in Gifts of the Outsider

The mod includes a full story and quest through which the powers are obtained, including encounters with the Outsider, who in the mod is voiced by Mathew Wade. Once you have downloaded the mod, you can begin the Dishonored quest by going to the abandoned houses on the shores of Lake Honrich, west of Riften. If you’d rather skip the quest and go straight to causing mayhem with your powers, you can shortcut by using the help command from the console menu; use help “<spell name here>” to return the spell id, then use player.addspell <spell id here> to add it.

Some of the powers from Dishonored are similar to spells and Dragon Shouts that already exist in Skyrim, but they’re different enough to be distinct and the Devouring Swarm spell alone makes this mod worth downloading. There’s something delightfully satisfying about being able to summon a swarm of plague-ridden rats and set them upon the Imperial scum/Stormcloak dogs (depending on how you play the game),and the Blink ability never fails to come in handy.

Half Life - Sven Co-op campaign

The other exciting mod on the way is Sven Co-Op, a multiplayer mod for Half-Life that has been in development for almost fifteen years, and will now be getting a standalone release on Steam, with a little help from Valve. The company, which recently allowed Bossa Studios to use Team Fortress 2 characters in a “special” operation for Surgeon Simulator 2013, has granted the Sven Co-Op development team access to the GoldSrc engine that was used to build Half-Life and its expansions, and will also release the revamped version of the mod as a free standalone on Steam. One of the developers detailed the following changes that will come with the GoldSrc access:

  • The next version of Sven Co-op will run as a standalone game using a custom build of the Half-Life engine.
  • The game will be FREE for all Steam users, including the official Half-Life campaign (for 2+ player co-op play). A Half-Life purchase will not be required.
  • Automatic updates will be available using Steam’s content delivery system dubbed SteamPipe. This will allow us to perform more frequent and rapid updates as needed.
  • Updates and new features will be added to the Half-Life engine, as well as a series of improvements to Half-Life‘s level editor called Hammer.
  • Increased Half-Life engine limits to allow for much larger and more detailed worlds.
  • Stability, performance, and gameplay improvements for everyone.

It’s always handy to have a friend around to help you if you acquire a headcrab hat against your will, and since the co-op game is free there’s no reason not to give it a spin when it becomes available on Steam. It will serve as a fun distraction while we wait for that Half-Life 3 announcement that’s on the way… definitely… any day now.

Let us know which of these mods are you more excited about downloading in the comments.
