Buried within the map files of the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 have been found files that suggest some classic Modern Warfare and MW2 maps could be heading to the record-breaking shooter. Those maps in question have been outed as Crash, Crossfire, High Rise, Over Grown, and Strike.

The five maps (one Modern Warfare 2 and four original MW) were hinted at by a couple of load screen files buried alongside those for Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer. It’s a pretty solid selection, but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Since Modern Warfare 3 has only been available to fans for a few days now, I wouldn’t expect any confirmation from Activision or Infinity Ward just yet. But, based on what IW delivered as DLC for Modern Warfare 2, players could expect some DLC that features fan favorite maps from previous entries in the series.

Typically, a map pack for the Modern Warfare side of Call of Duty, would feature three new maps and two classic maps as part of a five-map package. Now, with Spec Ops Survival occupying a similar space to Black Ops’ Zombie mode, one has to wonder whether or not we would see the fifth spot be taken up by a more Survival friendly map, but it would make sense for these five maps to be the first pack.

It’s all a waiting game at this point — trying to see whether or not Infinity Ward will begin the inevitable DLC discussion. My guess, based on the fact that Call of Duty Elite hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts — granted, Activision has already provided some compensation for that misstep — that the publisher is more focused on getting the stat-tracking service working perfectly before any talk of future Modern Warfare 3 content begins. And don’t forget that premium members of Call of Duty Elite are getting these map packs for free, making the service running smoothly even that much more important.

So, keep on the lookout for more news on Modern Warfare 3 map packs in the coming months, but for now enjoy your plentiful MW3 map selection.

Aside from the maps that are hidden in the MW3 files, which classic Call of Duty maps would you like to see return? Or would you like a whole new set of map packs without any classic ones?

Modern Warfare 3 is out now for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
