Ubisoft's upcoming fantasy RPG Child of Light is the brainchild of Far Cry 3's creative director Patrick Plourde and lead writer Jeffrey Yohalem, who have also previously worked together on the Assassin's Creed series. Just looking at the trailers it seems to have been significantly influenced by successful indie games like Limbo and Braid, but under the surface is a complex combat and resource management system that includes over 600 crafting combinations and 200+ unlockable skills.

Players take on the role of Aurora, a child who has been stolen from her home and must find her way back, reclaiming the sun, moon and stars from the mysterious Queen of the Night along the way. Accompanying Aurora on her journey through Lemuria is Igniculus, a firefly, and a new co-op trailer for Child of Light demonstrates exactly how two players can work together as these characters.

Luckily, Igniculus isn't just the kind of companion who just flits around uselessly and yells, "Hey! Listen!" in a high-pitched voice (naming no names). The firefly can discover secrets hidden on the screen, can use his light to blind enemies so that Aurora can avoid battles, and pull off plenty of other useful tricks like temporarily stopping traps to allow her to pass through.

In addition to two players working together, a walkthrough trailer for Child of Light also showed that it's also possible to aid other friends who might be playing the game by scrawling messages on the environment that give warnings of what's to come and how best to deal with it - similar to Dark Souls.

This is definitely one of the most interesting looking games coming out this year, especially given the creative team behind it, and for fans of strategic turn-based combat (when the game was first announced, JRPGs like Final Fantasy 6 were named as specific influences) it's sure to be plenty of fun.

Child of Light will be available for download for $14.99 on April 30, 2014 for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
