Mega Man Creator Keiji Inafune Resigns Capcom

Less than a week ago, the gaming world was shocked to find out that legendary game designer, Keiji Inafune, had resigned from Capcom. During Keiji Inafune’s 23 year career at Capcom, he worked on nearly every Mega Man game and served as executive producer on numerous titles including Dead Rising and Street Fighter IV.

This is what Capcom had to say about Inafune’s resignation in a recent investor’s meeting:

“With the harshness of the current market, we felt that there was the need for some fundamental reforms to the development structure. During the preparation phase for these structural reforms, Mr. Inafune had desires for where he’d like to progress as a creator, and as a company we accepted this, resulting in the announcement.”

Based on this statement and those of Inafune, it sounds like Capcom was not willing to take some of the chances creatively that Inafune wanted to explore. Upon his resignation, Capcom wasted no time in removing Keiji Inafune from their corporate officer list. It seems that his duties have been taken over by Katsuhiko Ichii. Also, following Inafune’s departure, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi was added as a corporate officer.

Both Inafune and Capcom have kept things professional, but after a 23 year relationship, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were some hard feelings. It is evident in the video announcing Mega Man Legends 3 that Inafune had big ideas for Capcom and it is sad to see him go.

Probably the biggest question on gamers’ minds right now is the future of Mega Man Legends 3. It was Inafune’s pet project and many people could not wait to see what he did with it on the 3DS. In fact, it is number two on Game Rant’s Top 5 Most Anticipated 3DS Games. Capcom has not yet commented on the status of Mega Man Legends 3, but it’s safe to say its future is shaky.

This is definitely a loss for Capcom, but hopefully it will turn out well for the gaming community. Let’s hope Keiji Inafune finds a new beginning and gets right back to work on awesome and creative video games.

Are you sad to see Keiji Inafune leave Capcom? How do you think this will affect Mega Man Legends 3? What would you like to see Inafune work on next?

  1. Sad to see him go, but my interest is definitely peeked on whatever he decides to go into next. Please come to the West!

  2. He should not have left. I see him as only struggling on his own.

  3. Inafune can write his own ticket – I can’t imagine a developer, publisher, or platform manufacturer who wouldn’t want him on staff.

    • I agree, Jeff. The guy invented Mega Man for crying out loud!
