Despite the demand for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to be remastered, it seems publisher Activision has no such plans. Players are going to have to keep waiting and wishing for the remastered trilogy to be completed.

Players expected that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would get the remaster treatment after the full-blown remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2016 and then the remaster of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign in 2020. Being that both of these titles were well received, it seemed likely that a third would be on the way. This was further supported by a leak by Twitter user and Call of Duty news expert TheMW2Ghost. Back in May of this year, he stated that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Campaign Remastered was still expected to release in Q2 of 2021, but this no longer seems to be the case.

In a definitive statement sent to the website CharlieIntel.com, an unnamed Activision spokesperson has said, A remaster of Modern Warfare 3, campaign or multiplayer, does not exist. Any reports otherwise are incorrect.”

While a Modern Warfare 3 remaster was expected, it was never anything more than a rumor. It seems odd that Activision would not remaster the final game in the series after doing the first two, but it’s possible that between annual Call of Duty titles and ongoing Call of Duty: Warzone season updates, Activision would rather focus on those efforts rather than remasters of old titles.

The Modern Warfare series, originally launching with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007 and ending with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 2011, was an immensely successful series that reshaped Call of Duty and even the modern FPS as players know it today. Developed by Infinity Ward and praised for its tight controls, class creation systems, and easy online matchmaking, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was also the first time in the series that the games broke away from their World War 2 setting and instead tried something modern-day.

This would later lead to the series trying various other settings like the Cold War and more futuristic sci-fi environments. Modern Warfare is generally regarded as the peak of Call of Duty though, evidenced by the Modern Warfare series being rebooted with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019 to more acclaim.

With Call of Duty: Warzone being as popular as it is, it certainly makes sense that Activision would want to put as many resources as possible on it. However, it is very disappointing that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered trilogy will remain unfinished. Players will just have to wait for their favorite Modern Warfare 3 weapons and characters to make it into Call of Duty: Warzone instead.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
