There was never any question that Call of Duty: Ghosts would be following a similar route to other installments in offering its owners a DLC Season Pass, but now that the official trailer has been released, potential buyers can see exactly what they'll be getting for their dollars.

In short: new maps, in-game multiplayer items and customization options, and a new four-part episodic campaign in Ghosts' new 'Extinction' game mode. Sadly, the official trailer offers no further information on future dog-themed expansions.

The Season Pass nets owners access to the four DLC packs being planned: 'Onslaught,' 'Invasion,' 'Devastation' and 'Nemesis,' but fails to offer any release dates or details of what each pack will include. The four-part 'Extinction' campaign is of particular interest, not only due to the fact that the addition continues to chart a new course for the CoD brand, but the apparent decision to split the campaign up into each DLC content pack.

What is confirmed is that the purchase of the Season Pass not only grants players access to all four packs, but unlocks the pre-order bonus multiplayer map 'Freefall.' The Season Pass retails for $49.99, a savings of $10 over the cost of purchasing each $15 DLC pack individually. As a bonus, when players who purchased Ghosts for either the Xbox 360 or PS3 take Activision up on their offer of upgrading to next-gen versions, the Season Pass will come with them.

Call of Duty Ghosts Season Pass Trailer

DLC Map Packs have been somewhat taken for granted since they first became a staple in the Call of Duty franchise, but there is reason to expect that the sales numbers of these content packages will be scrutinized to a greater degree than normal. After Ghosts received overwhelmingly mixed reviews from many outlets, some critics went as far as claiming that troubled times could lay ahead for Activision and the franchise.

Activision has widely dismissed such assertions, claiming that they're in the business of keeping their fans happy, not reviewers. And given just how many copies of the game sold in the first few days, their confidence is somewhat justified. Nevertheless, if the Season Pass sales, or those of the individual DLC packages are higher or lower than normal, expect to see one side or the other cite the numbers as evidence for their cause.

Will you be purchasing a Season Pass, and if so, which of the content are you most excited to unlock? Sound off in the comments.
