Microsoft Talks Xbox One PS4 Comparisons

Not unlike last night's midnight openings for Grand Theft Auto VCall of Duty fans will be waiting in line to purchase the upcoming installment in the first-person military shooter franchise on November 5 at midnight for PS3, PC, Wii U, or Xbox 360. Chances are pretty high that many of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers in that group will end up buying a next-gen machine long before they are ready to call it quits on Call of Duty: Ghosts. With those fans in mind, Activision has announced the official details for its next-gen upgrade options.

Details on how the upgrades will work are slightly different depending on whether you are going from Xbox 360 to Xbox One or PS3 to PS4. Here's how things will break down for each of the options...

For a limited period of time, all PS3 copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts will include a redeemable code that will allow players to purchase a digital copy of the PS4 version of Ghosts for $10. Digital copies of the game purchased through the PlayStation Store will automatically be eligible for the next-gen upgrade. If you are interested in the PS4 upgrade, you will need to redeem your code no later than March 31, 2014.

UK and European gamers will also get a chance to upgrade PS3 physical copies to PS4 physical copies for $10 thanks to special offers from Game (UK) and GameStop. No similar options for future Sony PS4 owners in North America have been detailed yet.

Microsoft is offering a package deal for both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of Ghosts as part of its Game Ahead program. The offer is digital only and has a suggested retail price of $69.99. Customers looking to go all-digital also have the option of picking up the Xbox 360 copy through the Xbox Games Store and then later upgrading to the Xbox One version for an additional $10.

Consumers transitioning from Xbox 360 to Xbox One will also have the opportunity to upgrade through a variety of special programs being offered by Amazon, Best Buy, or GameStop. Most of these offers are only valid through December 31, so shoppers will need to act quickly before the holiday season wraps up.

Lastly, Activision confirmed that any consumers who purchase the Call of Duty: Ghosts season pass before March 31, 2014 will receive a next-gen upgrade as part of the package. The season pass costs $49.99 and will include four DLC map packs and the Team Leader digital content pack.

The first-person shooter was designed with fun over innovation in mind, so if all goes according to plan gamers should still have plenty of motivation to continue pouring hours into the title after they upgrade consoles. With plenty of options to choose from, it's safe to say that Activision is working hard to provide a seamless transition into the next-gen era for Call of Duty fans. Do you think $10 is a fair price to switch over to your new console of choice?
