One of the biggest selling points of the Call of Duty series is its multiplayer, with over 100 billion multiplayer matches having been played so far. With Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the latest game in the franchise, developer Sledgehammer Games decided to switch things up as they introduced 'Exo Zombies'. Instead of the normal running and gunning of past Call of Duty zombies modes, Exo Zombies featured powerful zombies wearing exo suits and it had a narrative tied to it too.

In the Exo Zombies campaign, which was first introduced alongside Call of Duty's Havoc DLC, four Atlas Corporation employees are forced to defend themselves against aggressive zombie hordes. There's Lilith who had never shot a gun until the zombies attacked, Kahn who had never gotten his hands dirty before, Decker who seemed to enjoy taking zombies out and another survivor named Oz. The characters are played by Rose McGowan, Bill Paxton, Jon Bernthal and John Malkovich respectively, with these big names joining Kevin Spacey to make for a truly star-studded cast.

Unfortunately, although Exo Zombies introduced a new style of play, some felt that the first part of the DLC was anticlimactic. The story was far from over though and the second part of the DLC sees players rescued and driven to safety, until their convoy is overrun and they are forced to defend themselves again. Not only does the game introduce a new Burgertown restaurant map but it also introduces two new zombie types: the Acid Dripper that leaks pools of toxic acid around the level and a Goliath zombie that's wearing goliath class armor and will surely be tough to defeat.

The DLC will also feature a new ally, with a warbird offering support from above. Judging by the trailer, the pilot may also wind up rescuing the survivors, if they can defend their positions for long enough. There are new weapons as well, including the OHM Directed Energy two-in-one LMG/Shotgun and its OHM Werewolf Custom Variant and the Magneton Microwave Gun. Players will need this extra firepower to rescue NPCs in the Civilian Extraction mode, which is also new with Ascendance.

Exo Zombies players can take advantage of new traps too. There's a water monster that will eat zombies, a watchtower that will laser zombies to death and a trap that will electrocute them. These new traps will be handy for strategic players but they also make the DLC incredibly replayable too.

On top of this, the Ascendance DLC includes four new multiplayer maps, separate from Exo Zombies. There's Perplex which is set in a five-story apartment complex in Sydney, Australia, there's Site 244 which takes place at a crash site next to Mt. Rushmore in the USA, Climate which is in a climate-controlled biodome and Chop Shop which takes place in the exo black market and features an EMP turret as a map-based scorestreak. And there's an Exo Grapple playlist too, for Call of Duty players who prefer their gameplay to be more vertical.

The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Ascendance DLC will be released on the 31st of March, 2015. The DLC is a timed exclusive on Xbox Live and will be released on PC and PlayStation consoles at a later date.
