It's been around four years since the last release in Gearbox Games' massively popular Borderlands series. Since then, players have been clamoring for a chance to return to the world of Pandora and it's unusual inhabitants. Now it seems fans might get their hands on Borderlands 3 before March of next year.

Signs pointing towards Borderlands 3 can be found in a recent press release from Borderlands publisher 2K Games parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Following the delay of another hotly anticipated Take-Two game Red Dead Redemption 2, the company seems to be confident for a successful 2019 fiscal year thanks not only to Red Dead 2, but also the launch of what was described as a "highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises."

Of course, all of this has led to much speculation over what game Take-Two is referring to, but Borderlands 3 seems the most likely candidate. Its been fairly common knowledge that Gearbox has been hard at work on a new Borderlands title for over two years now, with it recently having been revealed that 90% of the studio's staff has been allocated to working on the sequel.

Borderlands 2 possible 2018 launch

For their part, the team over at Gearbox hasn't been quiet about the game's development, presenting a Tech demo at GDC last year and slipping messages referencing Borderlands 3 into Battleborn. Even Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has become prolific for his teasing of the game, recently joking on twitter of a sentient flamethrower in the game courtesy of Elon Musk.

Still, it's important to remember that this is far from an official announcement. 2K Games is a large and successful publisher that's always working on new titles. With series like BioShock and Mafia under its banner – not to mention its long list of sports titles – it's entirely possible the game being teased is something else altogether.

Regardless of what new title Take-Two is referring to, a new Borderlands is coming, but it's simply a matter of when. The team over at Gearbox have a lot to live up to, but everything we have seen so far would indicate that fans should expect something great. Until then, fans will have to hang out with Tourge and Tiny Tina just a little longer, and how bad could that really be?

Borderlands 3 is currently in development for unspecified platforms.
