The last brand new game in the Borderlands franchise was Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! in 2014. Although plenty enjoyed the chance to learn about Borderlands 2 bad guy Handsome Jack, four years on, many fans are now eager for another entry in the franchise that will take the story forward.

Fan wishes may soon come true if recent comments by Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, are to be believed. In an interview, the executive said that fans could expect "a huge new title from 2K" during the 2019 financial year. 2K Games is the publisher behind the Borderlands franchise, so people immediately began to speculate whether the new game that Zelnick was referring to is Borderlands 3.

The series' developer Gearbox Software has been working on a new Borderlands game for at least two years, and has continued to tease the title during that time. Not only did Gearbox's Randy Pitchford tease Borderlands 3 at GDC earlier this year, but the developer also included a Borderlands 3 message in Battleborn, the multiplayer shooter that recently got a DLC expansion.

Additionally, just a month ago, a UK retailer listed the sequel for PS4 and Xbox One. That retailer has clearly jumped the gun as no public announcements for Borderlands 3 have been made since. However, retailers do have information about games well in advance so that they can prepare to promote the game and offer pre-orders, and it seems like 2K, Gearbox, and Take-Two are gearing up towards a big reveal.

Unfortunately, it's unclear when Borderlands 3 will be released, even if Zelnick did refer to the "huge" 2K game in reference to Red Dead Redemption 2, which launches early 2018. The 2019 financial year runs from April 2018 to March 31, 2019, meaning that the game in question could be released at any point during this time frame.

It's also important to point out that Take-Two hopes to release a triple-A game each year, excluding its annualized sports titles, NBA 2K and WWE 2K. This would suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 could be the only game released in 2018, meaning that Borderlands 3 will be released in early 2019. It's disappointing that fans may have to wait another year and some change for the highly anticipated game, but if it is as big a game as Zelnick says, then Gearbox may need that extra time to make it perfect.

Borderlands 3 has yet to be officially announced.
