Blizzard Amends Restrictions for ‘Diablo 3′ Digital Purchases

Diablo 3 72 Hour Restrictions Lifted

After a few days of consistently frustrating news from the world of Diablo 3, everything seemed to have calmed down as Blizzard dealt with yet another round of backlash regarding their latest hit and the up to 72 hour restrictions put in place for anyone purchasing the game digitally.

There is now an update on that story, but before you pick up your torches and pitchforks, it appears that Blizzard has taken the criticism in stride this time and scaled down the severity of the holds placed on new players’ accounts.

Previously, anyone who bought the game online would only be allowed access to the equivalent of the Starter Edition of Diablo 3 until their credit card information had been verified. In other words, a customer could have to wait up to 72 hours to have full access to the game they already paid for.

According to a recent forum post by a Blizzard community manager, the specific restriction that enraged players so much was actually a mistake:

“However, as an unintended consequence of these security measures, players who purchase the game digitally after patch 1.0.3 are temporarily being capped at level 13 and not able to proceed beyond Act I.”

As gamers, we always want to expect that patches and updates are thoroughly tested before being released for public consumption. Unfortunately, as we saw earlier this week with Fez, and for months on end with Skyrim, that is not always the case.

Below are the “standard security-related restrictions” that have stayed intact after the 1.0.3a patch mended the Act 1 and level 13 caps previously enforced on all digital purchasers:

  • No public game access for unverified digital purchasers
  • No auction house access (real-money or gold) for unverified digital purchasers
  • Unverified digital purchasers cannot trade items or drop items for other players to receive
  • Unverified digital purchasers are not able to chat in any public or game channels
  • Unverified digital purchasers cannot attach a custom message to friend requests, but they can send/accept friend requests, and play with their friends
  • Global Play is not available for unverified digital purchasers

Although a player’s experience with Diablo 3 will still be temporarily stunted, this is clearly preferable to being unable to progress past the first Act while waiting for Blizzard to verify one’s transaction. Lylirra, the community manager, made sure to stress that the typical response time is much shorter than 72 hours, usually closer to a single day for most players.

  1. If this was any other game, people would be running away. But because it’s blizzard and diablo, and the brand is so strong, people will stick around and line the pockets of the blizzard-activision mafia. It’s sad, really.

    Everything about the launch of this game has just been wrong. Nobody should reward a company that treats its legitimate customers like criminals with these draconian measures.

  2. Mistake my eye. Just like BioWare and the endings of ME3, Blizzard underestimated the consumer and thought people would just accept whatever draconian measures they (Blizzard) wanted to impose.
