The upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 features 4-player split-screen for the Zombies mode and multiplayer, as well as 2-player split-screen for the campaign.

While some first-person shooter franchises are abandoning split-screen completely, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will feature it extensively. This is according to the game's director, Dan Bunting, who has detailed how split-screen will work in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

The game will support 4-player split-screen offline in both the Shadows of Evil Zombies mode and the multiplayer. For the co-op story campaign, up to two players will be able to play on a single console in split-screen. Additionally, it's possible to take up to two players in split-screen online as well across all three game modes.

This is great news for fans of the franchise, and it's refreshing to see a company continue to offer support for local multiplayer functionality. While many gamers like to hate on Activision and Call of Duty, the franchise has supported local multiplayer since Call of Duty 2 launched on the Xbox 360, and we're happy to see it continue to be an important feature for the series.

That being said, it hasn't been confirmed if the last-gen versions of the game will support split-screen, or at least, in the same capacity as the new-gen versions. After all, the last-gen versions of the game won't even have a campaign mode, so we wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see the last-gen versions have less extensive split-screen functionality. Perhaps this could be limiting Zombies and multiplayer to two players instead of four, or dropping the split-screen/online support, but whatever the case may be, Treyarch has yet to comment on the matter. With the game's release in less than two week's time, we'll find out definitively soon enough.

While it's popular to hate on the Call of Duty series, it's hard to deny that most all entries in the franchise offer significant value compared to most other first-person shooters. When taking into account the game's co-op campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, split-screen support, and the new Free Run mode, it's really no surprise that Black Ops 3 is many's most anticipated game of the year.

Are you happy that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will have split-screen support? Do you still play games in local multiplayer and co-op? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be available on November 6th for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
