It's about time! We've been waiting on details about the next incarnation of Treyarch's popular Call of Duty Zombies mode since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was officially unveiled back in the spring. The mode was first introduced in Call of Duty: World at War as one of their four-player co-op features (something Infinity Ward has never been able to replicate in the Modern Warfare series) and it made a triumphant return in Black Ops two years ago with themed maps and wild characters.

From Robert McNamara, JFK, Fidel Castro and Richard Nixon teaming up against the undead, to a celebrity-powered downloadable content pack featuring Danny Trejo, Robert Englund, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michael Rooker and George Romero, Black Ops 2 has some high expectations to meet.

While the Zombies mode is a source of key marketing and buzz generation for Activision, it's remained too simple in its two releases to date. The mode still involves only four players fighting waves of enemies in tight areas, with a few of the DLC packs opening it up to larger environments.

With Black Ops 2, Treyarch is growing the mode substantially in their attempts to make this Call of Duty the most ambitious to date in every way, from nonlinear campaign design and groundreaking eSports support to a fleshed out (get it?) zombies mode that we know  will be playable up to eight players. That means 8-player co-op and 4v4 zombies in a more competitive setting.

According to rumors, new and old, that we dissected yesterday, it's very likely that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 may also introduce a zombies story campaign of sorts. Whether that means the main campaign of Black Ops 2 can be augmented by zombies or if there will be a separate story-based campaign specifically about the undead, we do not yet know. But we will find out soon.

Activision released a preview video for Black Ops 2 zombies earlier today (video up top), teasing the world premiere of the highly anticipated coming next week on September 26th. The only thing we can confirm is that there's a bus with boarded up windows, meaning  we can expect players to be able to ride inside of it.

What sorts of zombie features and modes would you like to see added to this year's Call of Duty?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launches November 13, 2012 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. It will release sometime in the five-month launch window on the Wii U.
