At this Friday's Spike Video Game Awards gamers will be treated to closer looks at some of next year's most highly anticipated titles, including Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite. Though the game, a spiritual successor to the first BioShock, has already received the VGA trailer treatment, this new footage promises to be equally compelling and enticing.

To that end, Irrational has teased what's in store for gamers with a 7-second clip from the gameplay trailer that serves almost as an amuse-bouche to the inevitable VGA appetizer. It doesn't showcase much, but for a brief snippet of footage it's pretty awe-inspiring.

In the trailer, seen above, we see the game's protagonist playing witness to one of BioShock Infinite's most intriguing creations: inter-factional combat. Although it is the characters of Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth at the center of BioShock Infinite's story, they are merely bit players in the ongoing struggle between the Vox Populi and The Founders, two of Columbia's major political factions.

Members of either group will, however, engage in combat with Booker — and by extension, the player — if they see fit. But as the trailer suggests, they should always focus on frying the biggest fish first. That big fish in this case is one of the game's various "Heavy Hitters" an enemy-type that is uniquely designed and more importantly harder to kill, almost like the Big Daddies.

The Heavy Hitter on display in the clip is called "The Handyman" — a lumbering half-man/half-robot that uses its massive arms and hands to wreak havoc upon Columbia's various man-made creations.

In addition to the full trailer for BioShock Infinite, the 10th Annual Spike Video Game Awards will also debut trailers for The Last of Us, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Gears of War: Judgment, and South Park: The Stick of Truth. But rest assured that beyond these known trailers, the awards show should have plenty of surprises in store for viewers and attendees.

Unfortunately, unlike past years, there haven't been any clues to suggest what we might be seeing. Apparently the only way to find out will be to watch the Awards this Friday, December 7th, at 6 PM PST on Spike TV. And make sure to check out the nominees for the Spike VGAs here.

What do you think of the 7-second tease for BioShock Infinite? What other games do you hope to see at the event?

BioShock Infinite will release February 26, 2013 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PC.
