One the best kept secrets of the year has just been unveiled. Irrational Games announced just moments ago that ‘Project Icarus‘ is in fact BioShock: Infinite. Moving from Rapture under the sea to Columbia, the city in the sky, BioShock: Infinite promises to rekindle your passion for the original, while changing your expectations completely.
Here’s a brief synopsis from BioShock: Infinite‘s official website:
“Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.”
Really though, why read about it when you can see Irrational’s amazing announcement trailer. Check it out here:
You’ve got to give Irrational some credit, they really know how to pull off a cinematic trailer, right? It starts by teasing us, making us believe we’re still in rapture, but then literally throws us out the window and into the sky city of Columbia. Let’s pray that our protagonist Mr. DeWitt hits the ground running, and we see more of BioShock: Infinite very soon.
What intrigued me the most from this trailer wasn’t the fact that took place in the sky, or that it was a very American and very nationalistic. No, it was the trailer’s antagonist, the cyborg always hidden in the shadows. One of his first actions was to crush a Big Daddy figurine beneath his foot, as if to say, “You ain’t seen nothing yet. You’ve entered a world of hurt.” The only substantial looks we get of the Robo-Daddy is his robotic hand and his still-beating heart.
After viewing the cyborg’s heart, my first question was not, “What is this thing?” No, it was, “What kind of technology do they have in this city?” On the BioShock: Infinite website the date for the game is said to be 1912, so they must have made some spectacular scientific breakthroughs to create such a metal monstrosity. What else could they have potentially created on Columbia? Is this cyborg simply the tip of the iceberg? How wonderfully mysterious.
Did this reveal surprise you as much as it did me, Ranters? Does BioShock: Infinite appear to be everything you’d want in a true sequel? Leave your thoughts below!
Bioshock: Infinite is tentatively scheduled for a late 2012 release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Holy effing eff. I’m sad that they had to tag the Bioshock name onto the title, but that trailer was bloody cool.
They’ve been quoted saying, “We feel this is a new IP.” I’m really hoping it’s a completely new experience, and not just BioShock in the sky. As much as I hate to say it like that…
I know that, but why even name it ‘Bioshock’ in that case? I understand they share common themes, but it’s just a little… I don’t know. I loved the trailer – it completely blew me away – but it doesn’t fit Bioshock. I actually feel Icarus was a great name.
If it’s only to make the universe feel more robust, I think it’s worth it. Just hearing ‘BioShock’ sets you in a state of unease and distrust, which I’m sure they’ll use to their advantage.
BioShock: Icarus would indeed have been a great title.
Totally did not see that coming. And that trailer is simply amazing.
I want a Big Daddy to take that puppet thing to school. Show him who’s boss.
Wow.
yeah movies sequils some times dont have the same name so it makes since to call it something else, yet it’s gonna be sweet
Can’t…stop…watching…
Oh, man, this looks fantastic! I certainly hope they still have audio diaries, though. What I don’t get is if this will still be happening in the same universe that Rapture is in. Like, even though you will be in the sky, will Andrew Ryan and Stanley Poole and Augustus Sinclaire still be hanging out in Rapture in the meantime? Ah well, I am really excited regardless. However, what does this mean for all of us in the International Order of the Pawns? Anybody know what I’m talking about?
In an interview over on the PlayStation Blog, Irrational says they’ll definitely be using audio diaries. They’ve also said Infinite “may” be connected to the Rapture universe… sounds like they’re trying to keep some secrets.
I bet we’ll see some more IOOP viral sooner or later.
YES! Skyoshock is actually happening. This is what I hoped the franchise would eventually move toward in the sequel, so I am psyched!!!!
I’m sold. Sold, sold, sold.
I loved the entire Bioshock 1 experience but Bioshock 2 ruined it’s vibe. This trailer for Infinite, however, delivers that Bioshock vibe on spades. Additionally, I cannot remember a time of my life in which I didn’t want a game set in a steampunk floating city. Levine has answered my prayers.
Again, sold.
This isn’t scheduled until 2012? Why are they making me wait that long? I want this now.
do you want as rushed load of garbage that looks exactly like bioshock but instead of water you have clouds, because that’s what will happen if they rush this garbage to you suckers.
i’m not sold, bio 2 was almost identical to the 1st, the only difference was dual wielding and being able to play as a daddy which mind you didn’t feel all to different from playing as jack.
i hope they completely re-do everything, yeah it wouldn’t hurt if they re-use certain background items like pillars etc, so long as they don’t copy and paste the whole game across and add new ‘features’ which will inevitably be broken or seem pointless.
i’m just gonna wait for more info to come out.
You have to remember jwalka, BioShock 2 was designed/created by a different development team to Ireational. That was created by 2K Marin – think of it like the Call of Duty Infinity Ward/Treyarch split. That’s not to say 2K Marin will be making Bioshock 4 (they’re making the new XCOM game right now) but that’s the best analogy
you forgot one thing, they shipped of their coding/programming work over top china hence why the quality of the game was so crappy and the game itself sucked badly. 2k marin did the sander cohen area of bioshock1 so they should have done a better job for #2, that being said i quote my 1st sentence, needless to say if they get asians or indians to do programming/graphic designs and they use an old and outdated game engine, they aren’t going to win anyone over and are going to look like idiots for treading over old ground.
i was really hyped up for bio2 because of the sleek trailers (high quality cinematic i should say) not the gameplay, so like i said i’m gonna hang back and wait for further info
I can’t wait till 2K Marin gives us Bioshock: Finite.
I hope 2K confuses everyone and has Bioshock 3 come out after Infinite. But seriously, if Irrational started on this after finishing Bioshock 1 what the heck is taking them until 2012? That will be a 5 year dev cycle. This game better blow our minds taking that long.
