Batman Arkham City Freeze Screenshots

There isn't going to be any shortage of returning foes and difficult challenges awaiting Gotham City's caped crusader with this yea's Batman: Arkham City. With Gamescom 2011 in full swing, developer Rocksteady Studios have released a few more screenshots, giving fans a look at the kind of carnage that one of Batman's oldest enemies will unleash upon the inhabitants of Arkham City.

It's only been days since Mr. Freeze was revealed to be appearing alongside other members of Batman's rogues gallery, and the trailer did more than enough to get fans of the frozen menace excited. Now a new batch of screenshots from the game, along with a few stills from the announcement trailer are hinting at a few possible plot points and alliances.

With Gotham City crimelord The Penguin pulling more than a few strings in the game's story, it's no surprise to see Cobblepot's Iceberg Lounge appearing in these new images. The developers obviously have a few tricks up their sleeve, and the uneasy alliance between Batman and Bane may not be the only one of its kind in Arkham City.

While Mr. Freeze's costume may be somewhat more substantial than in previous incarnations, but there's just no mistaking his trademark ice attacks. See for yourself how Penguin's lair has been put on ice by the desperate doctor:

While some may have seen the various enemies aligned against Batman in Arkham City as merely a way of increasing the amount of content, missions, and challenges in the game, it's seeming more and more likely that they will all have an impact on the plot. If Mr. Freeze has left his mark in and around Penguin's hideout, then anything from a rivalry to a partnership between the two can be assumed.

If either of those is the case, then there looks to be a serious number of suspicious and mysterious plotlines that Arkham City will be dealing with. And that's not even considering Bruce Wayne's romantic entanglements and apparent personality disorder.

Batman will be doing his best to stay warm - and breathing - when Batman: Arkham City is released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 onOctober 18, 2011.
