It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Batman is as much defined by the villains he faces as his personal tragedies. With theatricality the lasting trademark of his enemies, many of his battles play out in a manner similar to classic drama, with over the top action and unrealistic characters. But where there's great drama, there's usually great romance, and Batman: Arkham City will be no exception. The Dark Knight's most complicated foil, Catwoman, will be joining him in the events of Arkham City, and the game's writer has now explained that the depiction of the two will be as faithful to the comic books as fans would hope.

Once Catwoman was revealed as a playable character, not just a cameo for the upcoming sequel to Arkham Asylum, it was clear that the developers at Rocksteady were going to be exploring new territory. The methods for traversal and combat are vastly different, but the addition of Selina Kyle will also be bringing the classic tension between the two black-suited crimefighters to gamers everywhere.

That's according to Paul Dini, the legendary comic book writer who has penned the script for Arkham City. Fans never know what to expect whenever another medium tackles the relationship between Batman and Catwoman, but Dini maintains that the game won't be likely to upset those faithful to the Batman universe.

The relationship between the two has ranged from near ideal romance and understanding to flat-out enemies over the years, but that's to be expected when the two operate on very different sides of a moral boundary. Dini explained to Siliconera that Arkham City won't be shying away from the inherent tension between the two, and that fans can expect to see them butt heads:

"I’d say it’s pretty true to their current relationship or what everybody thinks of their relationship. There is a lot of heat between them, we’re not going to take it really beyond that in a soap opera way. There is affection, mutual esteem, and there is also a lot stubbornness. Like, if you don’t do what I’m going to say we’re going to fight now,

"There’s always going to be that heat between and yet there is always going to be friction between them because when it comes down to it they have different methodology on how they solve a problem. For as much as they feel for each other, one’s on this side of the law and the one’s on the other side of the law. They can kind of hold hands over that side, but that’s about as far as we take it in this one. That said there’s a lot of action."

It's nice to know that the writer has kept the comic book relationship between Catwoman and Batman intact, since time has shown that it's complicated enough to hold fans' attention for more than a decade. And given how well the characters in the previous game were written, we can all expect to see some memorable scenes between the two.

What remains unclear is how the relationship between Batman and Talia al Ghul will play out, now that she's been confirmed to appear. If accuracy is what the team is going for, then Talia could seriously complicate things for Batman in more ways than one. We highly doubt that the third Batman title from Rocksteady will involve Batman babysitting the pair's son Damian.

Either way, at least we know what to expect from Catwoman. Are you comic book fans happy to hear that the relationship between the two is being taken completely from the comics? Or would you have preferred a re-imagining similar to that of Robin?

Batman: Arkham City will be bringing unrequited, masked love to fans everywhere on October 18, for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
