Assassin's Creed 3 Japan World War 2 Egypt

When Ubisoft revealed that a senior development team had been toiling away on Assassin's Creed III for over three years - almost immediately since the conclusion of AC II - it essentially rendered the mass of location speculation (including our own list of desired settings for Assassins Creed III) during the same time frame as all-for-naught wishful thinking.

Nonetheless, we felt that much of the theory and conjecture about the next destination for Assassin's Creed III actually bolstered enthusiasm for the series as a whole - and served as a genuine reflection of ardor by the game's diverse fanbase. There aren't many places you can take Assassin's Creed that Ubisoft Montreal's talented design team would fail to mold a fascinating and enthralling piece of historical fiction out of.

According to Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson however, many of the more popular ideas echoed were making him drowsy. Speaking  in an interview to OXM UK, Hutchinson was asked whether or not he had considered certain fan proposals for settings outside of the American Revolution. He then went on to assail a world war, a sovereign nation, and the former feudal empire of a sovereign nation as "boring:"

"People on the internet suggest the most boring settings.

The three most wanted are WWII, feudal Japan and Egypt. They're kind of the three worst settings for an AC game."

It's hard not to be swept up in the current outpouring of hype for the American Revolution - what with all the Assassin's Creed III trailers; screenshots; and details on gameplay, characters, story, and a new co-op mode emerging in the last month. That being said, it might be a bit of a stretch to consider the three aforementioned alternatives as devoid of any entertainment value.

Assassin's Creed 3 Boring Japan Egypt

Egypt sits in a similar pantheon with Rome (a main setting of Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood) as a cultural hotbed of historical significance and architectural majesty, and Feudal Japan was considered to be one of the leading contenders for the AC III setting until the last rumors were dispelled in March (not to mention, it played host to the richly poignant short film Assassin's Creed: Embers). World War II would indeed present a logistical nightmare - you're fast-forwarding the story by about 400 years and introducing automatic weapons - but the Templar lore suggests that Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan can't be ruled out in the future.

Hutchinson isn't completely closed off to settings outside of the American Revolution though. He did give praise to one country:

"[Assassin's Creed 3 writer Corey May] really wants to do India. I would too. I'd really love to do the Raj."

Ranters, the American Revolution hasn't grown old on us just yet, but are there any other locations that Assassin's Creed III should have explored? Do you agree with Alex Hutchinson's assessment that Egypt, Feudal Japan, and World War II are boring?

Assassin's Creed III releases on October 30, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
