UbiSoft announced today that Assassin’s Creed 2 has sold over 1.6 million units in its first week. This works out to be roughly 32% more than the original Assassin’s Creed, which still holds the title of fastest-selling original game property.
Once again I am not surprised Assassin’s Creed 2 is outselling the original. Sequels tend to sell better because they carry over all the hype from the original and have an installed fan-base.

Not long ago, Valve made similar reports about Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders being four times higher than the original Left 4 Dead. My question is, why don’t game companies gives us stats that mean something? They should compare their sales to hit titles such as Halo or Grand Theft Auto. Maybe I would then have an idea of how successful the title is.
Of course one clear benefit in comparing a part 1 to a part 2 is that the increased numbers keep you looking successful – because you were supposed to sell more units the second time around and you did… Yeah… Sounds about right…
Are you playing Assassin’s Creed 2? What makes it better than the first?
