UbiSoft announced today that Assassin’s Creed 2 has sold over 1.6 million units in its first week. This works out to be roughly 32% more than the original Assassin’s Creed, which still holds the title of fastest-selling original game property.
Once again I am not surprised Assassin’s Creed 2 is outselling the original. Sequels tend to sell better because they carry over all the hype from the original and have an installed fan-base.
Not long ago, Valve made similar reports about Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders being four times higher than the original Left 4 Dead. My question is, why don’t game companies gives us stats that mean something? They should compare their sales to hit titles such as Halo or Grand Theft Auto. Maybe I would then have an idea of how successful the title is.
Of course one clear benefit in comparing a part 1 to a part 2 is that the increased numbers keep you looking successful – because you were supposed to sell more units the second time around and you did… Yeah… Sounds about right…
Are you playing Assassin’s Creed 2? What makes it better than the first?

I am really enjoying Assassins Creed II, and think it is a great game overall. The story is much deeper and the character, Ezio, is much more life like then Altair. That is to say, he has a bit more of a personality and back story to get you to relate. I think the combat can still be tweaked a bit, but they did add a lot more counter kills with the varieties of weapons. Definitely worth a play through. Though if you werent a fan of the first one, you might just want to rent it, it may be better but it still hold many similarities with Assassins Creed I.
i played this instead of sleeping yesterday
I just starting playing it today. So far I find it is much improved over the original. I like how I feel more connnected to the lead character(s) this time around. I will say that I am not a fan of the pointless context sensitive buttons (press A to kick feet, Press Y to pull down dress, etc).
So…I just finished the main plot of Assassins Creed II. Im not going to spoil anything thing, but I felt a little let down on some level. I really enjoyed the story, the end threw me for a loop and I am still trying to wrap my head around whats going to happen in the third game. Enjoyed the game, and might even play through again, or atleast finish all the mini games for my first run through…
I beat it yesterday, amazing game!!!
sean, i was a little shocked at the ending myself, they sure knocked us for a loop didnt they.. for those whove yet to beat it, dont even try youll never guess, its way way out there. but they mixed it in with the whole side plot secrecy modern day crap perfectly.
but assassins creed 3 is going to be EPIC, if they can improve the gameplay a little bit more, steal some building climbing and manuvers from infamous, it might be the best game ever.
soon AC3 is going to be the most anticipated game ever!!
