Assassins Creed Brotherhood Teased Unity Setting

After 6 games, 4 protagonists, and several different time periods and settings, Assassin's Creed fans know that every detail contained within Ubisoft's franchise could be a clue towards what's next. Even clues that don't lead to something immediately might actually be a hint as to what's in the franchise's future.

Take a scene from the ending of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, for example; a moment that, at first glance, seemed pretty innocuous, but was actually a clue towards not one but two future AC games. In fact, we didn't know it at the time but it turns out that one of the games hinted at in the scene is Assassin's Creed: Unity, the recently unveiled next entry in the franchise.

The scene in question comes towards the very end of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where Desmond encounters a series of hand-written symbols recreated in light. Among those symbols are two of note: the Phrygian Cap of the French Revolution and the Masonic Eye seen prominently during the American Revolution.

On their face, these two symbols could easily be construed as tantalizing teasers and nothing more. But, as former AC writer Jeffrey Yohalem explains, these symbols were actually hinting at the settings of two (at the time) forthcoming series entries: Assassin's Creed 3 (Masonic eye) and Assassin's Creed: Unity (Phrygian Cap).

While this could easily be a case of drawing connections after the fact, we'd like to believe that Ubisoft has some semblance of a plan for the Assassin's Creed franchise. Maybe they didn't sit down and say that Assassin's Creed 3 would be set during the American Revolution and Assassin's Creed: Unity would use the French Revolution as a backdrop, but at least there was some semblance of a roadmap in place for the franchise's future.

If this is true, then there is hope that fans might eventually see settings and time periods teased in other Assassin's Creed games. Feudal Japan, for example, ranks pretty high on most AC fans' lists as a place they hope the series visits and was even teased in last year's Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

For now, though, gamers have two Assassin's Creed titles to look forward to in 2014, and potentially two exciting time periods and settings. We know that Assassin's Creed: Unity, as effectively teased by Brotherhood, is taking players to the French Revolution, but where might the other game be set?

Do you think Brotherhood really teased AC: Unity, or was this just a matter of coincidence? Where would you like to see the franchise go next year?

Assassin's Creed: Unity releases this for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
