Assassins Creed 4 Adewale Freedom Cry Trailer

It's unlikely that players of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag have already run out of ways to spend their time throughout the Caribbean, but those looking forward to the first story-based DLC campaign won't have to wait much longer for a change of pace.

The 'Freedom Cry DLC' has been dated for release come December 17, 2013. While it's expected to launch simultaneously across the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 platforms, a Wii U and PC release may be somewhat delayed.

Taking the player away from Black Flag's hero Edward Kenway, and dropping him into the boots of his trusted right-hand-man Adewale, fifteen years after the game's opening. A runaway slave who found a mission and calling aboard Kenway's ship, the Jackdaw, Adewales find himself drawn into a story of survival and slavery - and the perfect chance to put his own training as an Assassin to use.

The advertisement confirming the release date - featured in Game Informer's digital issue - once again lists the DLC as coming in at over four hours long. And while that may not be as lengthy as some players hoped, it's unclear if the sprawling open world of Black Flag will be utilized for 'Freedom Cry' as well. If that's the case, then those four hours could end up at over a dozen (read our review for more details).

There is no word yet on pricing, but Ubisoft has confirmed in the past that a purchase of their Black Flag Season Pass will net owners a 20% saving - and plenty of weapon and multiplayer perks, not to mention a new ship. More details on story-based expansions are not yet forthcoming, although it has been confirmed that a playable Blackbeard is coming at some point.

First things first: how excited are you for a new twist on Black Flag's gameplay? Will you be picking up 'Freedom Cry' and if so, is it out of love for Adewale, or simply a desire to return to Ubisoft's high seas?
