Assassins Creed 3 Mohawk Armor

The initiated Assassin's Creed fans have plenty to look forward to come this Halloween, and we're not talking about candy. We're referring to Assassin's Creed 3, which will be setting the bar higher than ever where story is concerned, but a smoother, more intuitive play style, new animations, new traversal and the best graphics to date are also in the plans.

Just because the cosmetic elements may not have an impact on Connor's personal story or the American Revolution, that doesn't make it any less likely that fans will spend endless hours in a quest to unlock Connor's Mohawk Armor once they take a look at the concept art.

It's important to note that the concept artwork has not been officially stated by Ubisoft to be the armor that will end up in the game, but as we first saw with the leaked cover art, where there's smoke there generally tends to be fire. Considering just how little character art of Connor we've seen in anything but his hybrid Native American/Colonial soldier uniform, it's a safe bet that this art reflects the armor that will appear in Assassin's Creed 3. If that is the case, then players who wish to dive even deeper into Connor's Mohawk roots are in luck.

Those players who have already spent time exploring the nooks and crannies of Rome and Constantinople to unlock the Armors of Altair, Brutus and Ishak Pasha, respectively know the satisfaction that comes with a new outfit. It might be foolish to some to spend hours away from the main story quests just to look a bit more imposing, but the puzzles standing between the player and the armor have proven to be some of the most enjoyable aspects of the series. We'll have to wait and see what kinds of puzzles buried within Boston, New York and the wilderness will unlock the Mohawk Armor, but it's promising that the top-tier equipment reflect Connor's Native heritage, not his British.

It's hard to tell just how accurate the outfit is to Mohawk tradition, but there's no denying it will be getting Connor noticed. If the campaign involves him blending into crowds though, we might recommend wearing something a bit less conspicuous. The Mohawk Armor does raise plenty of questions, but we'll get to those later. For now, feast your eyes on the artwork in question:

We're expecting the campaign to kick things off with some surprises, hopefully having to do with how a young half-Mohawk, half-British boy ends up as a member of the Assassin Order. The Mohawk Armor obviously shows that Connor will be embracing his Mohawk heritage regardless of how the story progresses, but does raise some issues of practicality. The armor seen above, for instance, is unlikely to spot on the deck of a Revolution-era battleship, or help Connor blend into a crowd like we witnessed in our preview. Either the developers are counting on us suspending our disbelief at the man pictured above blending in anywhere, or they have some contextual costumes built in.

Placement within the campaign aside, the reveal of the Mohawk Armor does raise some interesting questions. Specifically, which aspects of the armor will be upgradable over the course of the game. Since Connor has been pictured with essentially the same shirt, waistcoat and hooded overcoat in all artwork and video, will there be any upgrading? The soldiers in the American Revolution weren't as big on armor as those centuries prior, so even the basic mechanic seems a bit off. There's a chance that the developers are going to be trying something very new, and giving players the chance to change Connor's appearance to a greater extent, but with less emphasis on plate armor. Otherwise, the system as it exists seems largely beneficial only for weapon upgrading, or accessorizing.

We'll have to wait and see if Ubisoft officially confirms this armor is the real deal, and if so, how the armor will function as an in-game leveling mechanic. For now though, the look certainly lives up to previous games.

Assassin’s Creed 3 will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 30, 2012. A PC release is scheduled for November 20, with a Wii U version also planned.
