Assassins Creed 3 Cover Revealed

Speculation on where and when Assassin's Creed 3 would be taking place has been growing since it was confirmed that the setting would be new, and today we have the strongest evidence yet. Thanks to a brand new piece of artwork, it seems that the American Revolution will act as the broader historical backdrop, and the new protagonist may in fact be Native American.

At this point it doesn't exactly matter what direction Ubisoft decides to take with the hero of Assassin's Creed 3, since the loyal fan base will almost certainly get on board just to see Desmond's story come to a close. While the closing moments of Revelations didn't leave too many hints as to when or where the third game would be set, Colonial America made the top of our list of most desired settings.

Ubisoft made it clear that early American was one of the ideas being tossed around, but have remained tight-lipped since then. Now an individual claiming to be a Best Buy employee has sent a few promotional images to Kotaku, claiming them to be officially released by the publisher in advance of an announcement.

We'll let you have a look at the potential new star of Assassin's Creed 3 before we delve any further into what this could mean for the series:

While new Assassins Creed 3 details are expected sometime soon, we definitely weren't expecting anything this definitive, or this stunning. If this image is official - and its quality certainly is convincing - then it seems the new protagonist will be sporting a sword, bow and arrow, tomahawk, and pistol. While the weaponry and colonial American clothing reinforces our suspicions that 18th-Century America would in fact be the setting, the hide leggings, feathers and dark complexion of the character seems to imply that he is, in fact, Native American.

While this decision may be seen as a bit controversial to some, we've already laid out our reasons for thinking that a Native American storyline is the way to go. The fact of the matter is that if the game took place in a Colonial city during the Revolutionary War, that wouldn't be that much of a change from the previous two games. But come up with a story that draws a character from Native villages and settlements to larger British towns and cities, and that really could be the "biggest" Assassin's Creed yet.

Either way, a Native American main character already promises much richer development and drama than a simple 'American.'
