Lighting, magic, and action! Ever wonder how important lighting can be in a video game? What would it be like to switch to a villain? How ruthless can mercenary soldiers actually be? Those questions can be answered in these great new video game trailers!
Below readers can find part two of the DUST 514 developer diaries, the “Lighting Showcase” trailer from Arma 3, and DLC trailer for Magicka that promises to raise the bar for all other digital content.
Welcome to New Eden, again. This new developer diary for DUST 514 comes to us as part two of an ongoing series. The first installment of the diary focused on what’s going to hook players and how it will work in conjunction with the EVE Online universe. Part two, again, brings us producer Thomas Farrer and art director Richard Dimond. In this second look they discuss how deadly the mercenary soldiers are as well as a fitting system that allows players to equip and effectively utilize armor, weapons, etc.
DUST 514 is set to launch in 2012, exclusively on PlayStation 3 and Vita.

Ready for a little more Magicka? A new DLC entitled “The Other Side of the Coin” is coming soon. Like the “Stars are Left” DLC, this download will expand the story in numerous ways. The content will not only include new story elements and challenges, it’ll also flip the role of the characters – allowing players to game as villains. Through “The Other Side of the Coin,” Arrowhead Games Studios will put users in the shoes of would-be evil-doers, Alucart the Vampire and his henchman, The Necromancers.
The Other Side of the Coin will also feature:
- One exciting new story challenge set among beautiful new Elven architecture
- Four new challenge maps playing as necromancers: World’s End, Volcano Hideout, OSOTC Arena, and the Mirror Crystal Cavern Hideout
- Necromancer introduced to PvP
- New achievements
- Innovative and dynamic spellcasting system with thousands of possible combinations
- Up to four player co-op in all game modes as well as single player option
- Experience the parody and satire of a cliché fantasy world
“The Other Side of the Coin” DLC for Magicka is scheduled for a digital download release on June 14, 2012 for only $4.99.

Didn’t get your fill of developer diary content? We’ve also received a new behind-the-scenes video of Arma 3. This special video explains the visual enhancements, specifically the lighting, of the sequel. Lighting is a crucial part of any game – especially when trying to establish a realistic (or immersive) environment. The lighting showcase covers how the team has adapted the night/day time shifts as well as how, depending on the time, the lighting will affect the gameplay. All elements have been considered, including nighttime, gunfire – and underwater lighting.
Take a look at the Arma 3 “Lighting Showcase” below:
ARMA 3 will release in the the fourth quarter of this year.

Lionhead Job Listings Hint at ‘Fable 4′ ‘Reimagining’ the Franchise

ARMA III is looking pretty good so far, but I still want to see some improvements in their character animations. They’ve always been very stiff and reload animations were just generic hands moving around and the weapon was magically reloaded. I’m hoping they took a hint from BF3′s animation system because that game has the best character animations of any shooter in terms of movements, reloads, etc…
Except jumping over things, which is hilarious.
How is it supposed to look like when you jump over things?
Not like your legs were launched out an air cannon, especially when you’re climbing up a level rather than vaulting cover.
I don’t know, when I vault over things that are about waist high, I throw my legs out… Don’t actually know any other way to do that actually, if you know of one, let me know. ARMA II did have a “step over” thing that should be pretty accurate for someone loaded down with armor and extra mags… Don’t think I would be vaulting over anything while loaded down like that, lol. But I guess it’s the game trying to allow for fast-paced movements. Doubt ARMA III would use that because they will probably stick with the more likely used method of resting your hip on the wall or fence you’re trying to go over and then bringing your legs over it instead of vaulting over it like you’re not loaded down with anything…
Still better than 99% of the animations seen in other games out there…
The rifle reloads are THE best I’ve seen in any game…
Pistol animations could be tweaked a little though in my opinion.
Quote Ken J: “BF3′s animation system because that game has the best character animations of any shooter in terms of movements, reloads, etc…”
From this and other posts you have made indicates you’re quite young and have been conditioned by EA and the like to believe BF/CoD are somehow realistic representations of human movement and ability.
ArmA’s character movement is far better than anything out there atm, anyone saying different has been EA brainwashed.
Um, yah… I take it you’ve never handled real weapons. Their reload animations in BF3 are actually correct. It’s the first game I’ve played where they accurately reloaded a shotgun inserting a shell directly through the ejection port to chamber a round before loading the magazine… Every other game will have you loading the magazine only, yet you can magically fire a shot without racking the “pump” to chamber a round. Same with the AK47 style weapons, the only game I’ve seen where the style of reloading used by Russian special forces are used in the game’s reloading animation. Where you take the new mag, run it along the trigger guard forward to hit the mag release lever and in the same motion you’re chucking the old mag out with the new mag, you then “rock and roll” the new mag into place. Then you roll the weapon to the side and reach over with the same (weak side) hand to work the charging handle to chamber the round.
But I guess if you’re inexperienced with firearms in real life like you obviously are, you wouldn’t notice these details, so I don’t blame you. But please, think a little before you accuse someone who have been shooting for 20 years and teaching shooting techniques for almost 5 years of being young and inexperienced.
I don’t know about 3, but up through ArmA II, they don’t have unrealistic reload animations, they simply do not have reload animations. They simply move their hands around and magically the weapon comes out reloaded… I guess you can try that in the real world with real weapons, but I’m thinking you’ll find out the weapon will not have more ammo in it after this process…
The plasma conversation in the dust trailer is nice to think about, but doesn’t seem terribly relevant to how the game itself will actually play. No one who plays shooters spends time marveling at the psychology of the weaponry.
