April NPD numbers are in and yet again Sony's PS4 leads Microsoft's Xbox One while hardware sales in general were up 120% over last year.
April marks the fourth month in a row that the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One, which tallied 115,000 units sold for the 30-day period. Sony has yet to report PS4 sales numbers, although NPD felt confident to name them the winner for April.
On the software side, it was a repeat performance for Titanfall, which once again led all game releases, only this time with the added boost of an Xbox 360 version. Clearly Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer focused, Pilot vs. Titan shooter has delivered on its promise from a sales perspective, even if it (arguably) didn't as far as gameplay goes.
Rounding out the top 3 were two older current and last-gen releases, Call of Duty: Ghosts and NBA 2K14, which likely benefited from a relatively quiet month for releases. In fact, most of the titles on April's top sellers list are from March or earlier, save for LEGO The Hobbit and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The most interesting omission from the bunch is, of course, inFAMOUS: Second Son, which opened at a strong number 2 last month. NPD does report that Sucker Punch's PS4-exclusive follow-up did lead sales for the platform, but apparently those numbers weren't enough to crack the top 10.
Similarly, Rare Studios' Kinect Sports Rivals led the pack as far as Xbox One exclusives were concerned, but didn't generate enough sales to reach the top 10. Clearly, although the new consoles are both selling well, their software sales are no match for that last-gen install base.
Also worth noting is the prevalence of LEGO titles in the top 10. Obviously, the brand is immensely popular among families and younger gamers, as is Minecraft, but it's surprising to see games like LEGO Marvel and LEGO Movie still posting top 10-worthy numbers. In other words, don't expect Traveller's Tales' franchise to go anywhere anytime soon.
While we wouldn't be surprised if form holds true for May's NPD numbers it will be interesting to see how Microsoft's new Kinect-less and cheaper Xbox One will impact sales numbers moving forward. As we mentioned, Sony has had the edge for a while now, both domestic and worldwide, but that could change now that Microsoft has leveled the playing field. It also doesn't hurt that a highly anticipated current-gen release like Watch Dogs is right around the corner.
