Rovio Considering ‘Angry Birds Space’ for PlayStation Vita

Angry Birds Space Could be on Vita

It’s no small secret that Rovio, the developer behind the wildly popular Angry Birds franchise, would like to get their product on as many platforms as possible. Right now, any given iteration of Angry Birds is available on everything from Facebook to mobile phones to a regular desktop. But for Rovio even that amount of dominance isn’t going to be enough for their next project, Angry Birds Space.

According to Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Offiicer for Rovio, they aren’t just looking to put Angry Birds Space on the iPad, the iPhone, and Android devices, they want to bring it to major handheld platforms as well – platforms like the new PlayStation Vita. With its rear and front touch controls, and beautiful OLED screen, the Vita would make a perfect fit for the mechanics of Angry Birds, so that seems like a no-brainer, that is if Sony agrees.

At this point in time, the interest is there for Rovio, but they will let the ultimate deciding factor be Sony‘s yay or nay. Vesterbacka wants to ensure that the Vita is a successful handheld before putting the man-hours towards porting it, but ultimately it will come down to Sony. The Nintendo 3DS will be getting its fill of Angry Birds shortly, which means that, if they want to stay competitive, Sony should follow suit.

“We’ll have our games on the 3DS pretty soon. The Vita we haven’t decided what to do about yet, but of course we want to be on all the screens, so let’s see how the Vita does in the market. And of course, always when working with these console guys it’s not that we can decide, it’s really if Sony wants to have Angry Birds on Vita. It’s more up to them than to us.”

Obviously first things first for Angry Birds Space – Rovio wants to get it out to the market and see how the fans respond to the new mechanics all of which are inspired by the game’s new setting. Our guess, based on fan reception to everything from the Holiday expansions to Angry Birds Rio, is that mobile gamers are going to eat this game up. Also it would be nice to see more of the actual game in action, rather than some overly hokey live-action trailers.

Would you be interested in checking out Angry Birds Space on the Vita? How should Rovio adapt the franchise to Sony’s handheld?

Angry Birds Space releases March 22, 2012 on the PC, Mac, and most mobile devices.

  1. I really, really, really want angry birds on my Vita, I swear sony I will buy it as soon as its released, this would surely be a hit and graphics would be so beautiful on the Vitas OLED

  2. Angry Birds is the most boring PoS game I have ever played. Played one level on my android and then deleted it. I don’t know how anyone can stand flicking hundreds of virtual birds with boring touch flicks, it boggle my mind.

But, it’ll be a good addition for the vita. I dont know why rovio would port it to the 3ds lol the 3ds outdated capacitive touch screen is just horrible

    • Angry Birds works on anything that has a touch screen. Saying they won’t port it to the 3DS because the touch screen is “horrible” is bullcrap. Multi-touch screens are inaccurate anyway, and I know this for a fact through lots of tinkering with my mom’s phone.

  3. This is good for the Vita, but it still doesn’t really make me want to fly out and buy one immediately. :/
