Three months ago (from the time of this writing), The Amazing Spider-Man developer, Beenox, teased a new gameplay mechanic, “Web Rush,” which would help ensure that the upcoming webslinger game wasn’t just another hum-drum movie tie-in (we’re looking at you Battleship).
While Beenox had teased the Web Rush mechanic before as providing players with “real-time navigational and combat choices,” the latest trailer (which you can check out above) presents a number of intriguing ways that the mechanic could be implemented – especially in the massive New York City open-world.
Reaction toÂ The Amazing Spider-ManÂ (the game) has been somewhat mixed so far – as the studio has released a number of exciting, albeit mostly generic looking, trailers for the title (detailing Spider-Foes such as TheÂ IguanaÂ andÂ The Rhino). Couple that with the usual stigma around movie tie-ins, not to mention the lackluster response to Beenox’ last Spider-Game, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and it’s hard to get too excited about the title at this point – meaning that a lot of the goodwill from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions has, in the last three years, been squandered.
That said, the aforementioned Web Rush mechanic could be a game-changer for the franchise – adding improved agility for those fast-paced chase sequences in the game’s open-world as well as slick (and strategic) options for combat encounters.
Previously, the gameâ€™s lead designer,Â Rodolphe Recca, described the Web Rush functionality like this:
“Web Rush can be triggered on the fly, at any moment and immediately presents you with a variety of situational choices, letting you pull off Spideyâ€™s signature moves like never before.â€
Spider-Man’s maneuverability around New York City is an especially welcome enhancement, as any regular gamer can, no doubt, remember plenty of occasions when a minor slip-up in an open-world chase translated into an insta-fail on the entire mission. Allowing gamers to temporarily slow-down time – in order to pick an especially effective grapple point – will easily turn what could have been a frustrating memorization section into a much more fluid and and strategic experience.
Similarly, combat looks to benefit significantly from the mechanic as well – providing Spider-Man some added options (especially in stealth scenarios). While we may have to wait until the final game is released to see all of the available Web Rush options, it’s definitely an intriguing improvement – and paired with the, aforementioned, open-world of New York City, it’ll be pretty hard for players to make the argument that The Amazing Spider-Man is too similar to Beenox’ prior franchise entries.
That all said, it wouldn’t hurt for the developer to take a short break from Spider-Man after this game – so that they can come back with some fresh ideas for another webslinger tale on par with the originality inÂ Shattered Dimensions. Of course, what’s more original than a playable Stan Lee swooping through the streets of New York?
