Movie tie-in games are often a dubious prospect - relying on cross-medium buzz, not quality gameplay, to sell a rushed product. Development turnaround on tie-games is notoriously tight and often lack the necessary insight into the larger film production needed to deliver a well-rounded product with meaningful (as opposed to superficial) connections. To that end, developers of superhero movie games often pull from subordinate source material characters that stand little chance of actually being incorporated into future films.

Yet, for every Iguana, Vermin, and Scorpion that was featured in The Amazing Spider-Man video game tie-in, several high-profile characters were also included, such as Black Cat, Lizard, Alistair Smythe, and Rhino. While Felicia Hardy (aka Black Cat) has yet to make an appearance in Marc Webb's Spider-Man universe, both Rhino and Smythe are present in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - with possible expansions for their characters in future films. Now, a new Amazing Spider-Man 2 game trailer has arrived teasing appearances by several notable villains - raising the questions: could we see Kingpin, Carnage, and/or Kraven show-up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, a Venom solo-movie, or Sinister Six team-up?

There are no guarantees that developer Beenox has any insight into what Amazing Spider-Man series writers have planned for future sequels but, as mentioned, the studio has made a concerted effort to tie their game world into the movie universe. These decisions don't happen in a bubble either - and Marvel, more than any other cross-medium company, is known for building interest in future live-action movie characters by slyly ramping up their appearances in other products (toys, games, etc.) before they are revealed for big screen adaptation.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Kraven

Either way, in addition to Amazing Spider-Man 2 villains Electro and Harry Osborne/Green Goblin, game-playing wall-crawler fans will be treated to a host of fun baddies in the upcoming tie-in. Check out the list of villains featured in the trailer (as well as a subsequent time stamp so you can see them with your own eyes):

  • Kingpin (0:06)
  • Felicia Hardy/Black Cat (0:10)
  • Electro (0:24)
  • Harry Osborne/Green Goblin (0:30)
  • Cletus Kasady/Carnage (0:35)
  • Kraven (0:59)

At this point, Beenox has yet to release a detailed breakdown of the game's plot - and how it ties-into The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie narrative. Preliminary info suggests Peter Parker is on the hunt for Uncle Ben's killer and, along the way, is mentored (at least briefly) by the traditionally villainous Kraven the Hunter. The latest teaser (seen above) suggests that Kingpin will also help shape the game story - by tainting Spider-Man's heroic deeds in the court of public opinion (and hiring Black Cat to take out the web-slinger behind the scenes).

Since the core Amazing Spider-Man movie plot has revolved around genetic experimentation, Kingpin is an unexpected albeit interesting addition to the game series (one that veteran game fans will, no doubt, remember from the beloved Genesis-era Spider-Man title). That said, featuring Kingpin in a future Spider-Man movie would be dependent on where the character's movie rights actually belong (game rights are different) - as Avi Arad has previously claimed Kingpin is a Spider-Man contract villain (meaning Sony owned) that was loaned to Fox for Daredevil.

Yet, the most surprising reveal comes in the form of lunatic serial killer Cletus Kasady, who punches through a window with a little from the Carnage symbiote.

The Amazing Spider Man Game Carnage Character

Without question, Carnage is an iconic rogue in Spider-Man canon (one that is also a favorite among Maximum Carnage players) but he's usually introduced as a consequence or byproduct of the Venom symbiote's existence. While Venom has yet to be introduced in the "Untold" reboot story, a Venom movie is in active development, and it makes sense that Carnage could eventually appear on the silver screen. Even without Venom, Kasady should be easy enough to explain in the context of the game - but will filmmakers need to re-write his origin story if he does serve as an antagonist for a future movie installment or will they simply ignore the video game character altogether (we're looking at you Rhino)?

Which of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game villains would you like to see in a big screen movie - and which ones are you most excited to fight in the upcoming tie-in?
