With some major comic book properties slated to hit theaters next year, it's about that time when publishers start announcing those films' associated tie-in games. Case in point: the announcement of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is slated to tie-in with Sony's blockbuster sequel.

In addition to the Amazing Spider-Man 2 reveal, Activision has released a teaser trailer for the game. Although the trailer is decidedly light on actual footage of Spider-Man it does promise plenty of web-swinging action.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in development at Beenox, the same team that brought gamers the wonderful Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. They were also responsible for the tie-in game for the first Amazing Spider-Man, which was still a quality Spider-Man game, but not on the level of Beenox's original creations.

And so, with that in mind, we're decidedly reserved about Amazing Spider-Man 2's potential. The good news is that Beenox has presumably had enough time to get this tie-in right.

At the same time, we'd venture to guess gamers would rather the developer try their hand at another original Spider-Man story. Alas, such is the business with game tie-ins, especially with Activision (see: High Moon Studios and Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Teaser Trailer

While details regarding The Amazing Spider-Man 2 film are plentiful, we don't know how closely the game will follow that sequel's storyline. The first Amazing Spider-Man game told its own story, and this game will reportedly do the same, although there was some crossover between villains. In other words, we would be surprised if Electro didn't make an appearance in the game.

The one new feature for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that we do know about is the "Hero or Menace" system, which rewards (or punishes) the player for either stopping crime or letting it go on undisturbed. How the system will factor into the game, overall, is unclear, but it has potential.

Overall, we're cautiously optimistic about this sequel, if only because Beenox has proven they can make a solid Spider-Man game, and they aren't afraid to embrace the character's varied "Rogue's Gallery." At the same time, tie-in games aren't typically as successful as original creations, either because of time constraints or due to a lack of creative freedom. The first Amazing Spider-Man wasn't as great as Shattered Dimensions, but it was still an enjoyable game, so we're hopeful Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be good.

What did you think of the first Amazing Spider-Man game? Are you looking forward to this sequel?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is targeting a Spring 2014 release, and will presumably hit alongside the feature film, which hits theaters on April 17, 2014. The sequel will be available on the 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
