It's been a few months since we last heard any news about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the forthcoming Marvel movie tie-in, but now it's time to finally blow the lid of this thing. Activision has officially unveiled their forthcoming game in a brand new reveal trailer, which sports some familiar gameplay and some familiar faces, but a new approach to the Spider-Man mythos.

As gamers can see in the trailer above, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature a unique riff on the relationship between Spider-Man and one of his main villains, Kraven. In this iteration, Kraven serves as a sort of mentor to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, training him to hunt the man who killed his uncle.

Positioning Kraven as a mentor for Spider-Man is certainly a unique approach, but it's unclear how fans of the comics will accept the idea. Kraven is, after all, a hunter, but he's usually after Spider-Man, not helping him.

Since this is only a reveal trailer it's also unclear how much of this Kraven storyline will factor into the full game — whether it will be a side story or the basis for the entire campaign. Spider-Man games, specifically those developed by Beenox, have featured a bevy of supervillains for Spidey to contend with, and we don't expect that to change in this game. The quest to hunt uncle Ben's killer is certainly a focal point, but we can't imagine it's the only one.

In fact, as you can see at the tail end of the trailer, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature an appearance by Electro, the same villain highlighted in the second Spider-Man feature film. This version of Electro does bare some similarities to Jamie Foxx's portrayal, but not completely.

While the first Amazing Spider-Man game left a lot to be desired, there were some elements that reminded us of Beenox's work on Shattered Dimensions — the title that seemingly tied them to Spider-Man for the foreseeable future. But, tie-in games have a longstanding track record of being pretty poor, and those that do succeed are few and far between. That said, there have been some truly excellent Spider-Man games in the past, and Amazing Spider-Man 2 does have a unique concept. We'll have to see how it all comes together in the spring.
