Sega: ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Has Not Been Cancelled for Wii U

Feb 14, 2013 by

Fear not Aliens: Colonial Marines hopefuls, the game has not been cancelled for Wii U. Or at least that’s the line Sega is feeding the press at this point in time.

After a less than desirable showing to the public-at-large, in the form of extensive gameplay videos and very poor reviews, Colonial Marines was thought to be among this year’s worst games, and it’s only February. Additionally, there were some questions as to whether developer Gearbox Software had pawned off much of the game’s development to third parties, who ended up botching the whole operation.

Whatever the case may be, the fact still remains there was a Wii U version on the horizon, one that seemed almost destined for failure. So, had Sega decided to cancel the title, gamers wouldn’t have faulted them too much.

Up until today, the running assumption has been that Colonial Marines was slated for a March release on Wii U. However, when Amazon removed the title from their online listing, talk of a cancellation soon followed. But Sega was swift to respond:

“It’s not true. We haven’t announced the release date for it yet but that’s it.”

If the game itself was getting bad reviews, it would make sense that any ports, especially one for a new console like the Wii U, were headed for a similar fate. Yes there was a cool feature that used the Wii U gamepad like the motion scanner from the movies, but gimmicks can only take a sub-par game so far.

At this point we don’t know how far along development is on the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines, or more importantly how closely the  port will resemble its console brethren. The PC version of the game appears to fare much better in the visuals category, so considering the Wii U is a “next-gen” console it’s entirely possible Nintendo‘s version will deliver higher quality graphics.

For now, Aliens: Colonial Marines is still planned as a Wii U release, and perhaps by the time it hits store shelves many gamers will have forgotten the tremendous backlash the game has received thus far. Or it will reignite the feelings of disappointment all over again.

Do you think Sega should cancel Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U? Are there any gamers out there that have been waiting for this version?

Aliens: Colonial Marines is out now for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. A Wii U release is expected some time in late March 2013.

  1. Aliens: Colonial Marines: Razor’s Edge

  2. To be honest, I would say that they should cancel it given the fact that its gotten so much flak but the Wii U needs a larger library. If anything when/if they do release it, it should be in limited release numbers so its not much of a loss..

  3. I rented the game from Redbox yesterday, and it’s not as bad as people say it is. Sure the graphics aren’t up to par, but I had some fun with it. It’s definitely not worth $60 though.

  4. I was thinking about buying this… until now.

  5. Contracts have probably been signed and payments have probably been made already. The game is likely well into development or close to finished. In this situation it’s probably a legal liability to not release it.

At the very least some people are going to buy a copy, which is likely better than none in the eyes of the publisher.

From what I understand the multiplayer component is one of the game’s strong suits, maybe putting extra emphasis on that area for the WiiU release might pull some interest.

  6. I pre-ordered it for the WiiU from Best Buy. They are having a BOGO 50% on WiiU games so my way of thinking is I paid $30.00 for it. Hopefully it will be better than has been stated since it’s had more time to develop and a different company is actually working on it. Just trying to stay optimistic.
