Gearbox Should Have Kept Mum Over ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines’

Gearbox Software early announcement for Aliens Colonial Marines

Company excitement about a game isn’t something unusual. However, in Gearbox Software’s case regarding Aliens: Colonial Marines, the excitement level is hitting way above 10. Randy Pitchford, CEO at Gearbox, says the company should have waited a little bit longer before they announced the game. Instead, thrills and excitement influenced the decision to let the world know they were working squad-based first-person shooter.

The information comes from the cover story of Official PlayStation Magazine, where Pitchford speaks about the untimely announcement for Aliens: Colonial Marines. Randy Pitchford is almost notorious for his excitement levels when talking about any of his company’s projects, including their latest, the poorly reviewed Duke Nukem Forever. One game is only a drop in the bucket for a development house that also gave us the Brothers in Arms and Borderlands.

The official Aliens: Colonial Marines announcement trailer puts the game at a Spring 2012 launch, giving Gearbox plenty of time to refine and tinker to ensure that it will be everything fans of the franchise will come to love. Pitchford’s statement to OPM follows, including what some may find to be a shocking revelation.

“Frankly, I think the game was publicly announced before… well, the first press release came out and the ink wasn’t even dry on the contract.”

“We hadn’t even written the first line of code when the announcement happened, and I think it’s because we were so excited and thrilled that this was going to happen.”

“We love Aliens vs. Predator, but this is pure, this is canon, this is ‘holy f***’. Between us and Sega and everybody we should have just shut the hell up until we were further along, frankly. It feels like a long time.”

Randy’s right, it has been a long time since the first rumblings of this project (it began development in 2006), including the scare that the game may have been canceled. Whatever the case may be, Aliens: Colonial Marines is going to be one of the bigger games to come out in 2012, and it’s still going to be a long, long wait until then.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be releasing in Spring 2012 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and the Game Rant crew can’t wait to play it as a team.

  1. if they hadn’t started coding when it was announced, then there’s a good chance it’ll get delayed until end of 2012 or early 2013. i have faith in gearbox, they’re a really good studio and know what people want (hence why old school shooter fans love duke, but current gen people hate it).

    • Actualy they announced it back in 2006 so it shoudnt be delayed for to much longer

  2. What they need to understand is that the marines are the most boring class to play out of the 3 i mean you can play as a generic solider in any game its much more fun to play as an Alien jumping from wall to wall or as a predator just sneaking around throwing spears at people so all can say to them is good luck……………………

  3. The Marines are the only class most people want to play with that I know !
    Why boring ?
Not boring at all ! Watch the Movie “Aliens” from Cameron and you know what it mean to have some cool marine action, hell yeah !

  4. Mark my words, this will not sell, I think right before it comes out I’ll put my copy of Aliens vs. Predator for PS3 on sale, I mean these are the same game.

Instead of giving us something new, like a 3rd Person Alien game, we get another FPS.

Well you can keep this game guys – maybe I’ll get more than $5 for that crappy AVP PS3 game too.

  5. man the game better be good if not then that might be an imberrasment i have folode the aliens since the first movie came out and if it sucks then ill probaly burn all my alien stuff

  6. I really like Gearbox. They make great games, and yes I do like playing Duke Nukem. Randy is his own hype machine for his company. That’s great! To some extend his hype works and I think most gamers like him. I’m excited about their new Aliens game too!
