While it's not exactly unusual to see a truly great new series coming to the tiny screen these days, genuinely unique takes on ideas are still a brilliant novelty when they make themselves known. One such instance is The Afterparty from Christopher Miller, which became a pretty quick hit during its first season when it flaunted its creative spin on the murder mystery formula. The star-studded cast probably didn't hurt either, and it looks like season 2 is all set to continue that trend.

Apple TV Plus has just announced a slew of newcomers for the second season of its beloved newcomer series, and it's just as packed to the gills as the first one. As was already known, Tiffany Haddish will return as the endearing Detective Danner after solving the mystery the first time around. But now, she'll be joined by Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao, who will reprise their roles as late-blooming sweethearts Aniq and Zoë, respectively. That's not the only big news, however, as now there's a whole new cast of characters taking an increasingly crowded center stage for the next story.

Season 2 of murder mystery comedy The Afterparty will star Zach Woods (The Office, Silicon Valley), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Poppy Liu (Hacks), Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell), Anna Konkle (PEN15), Vivian Wu (Away), and Jack Whitehall (Bad Education). Keeping to a particular theme that kind of comes with the territory on a show called The Afterparty, the continuation will take place at a wedding and will be told over 10 episodes, rather than 8 like in season 1. As many suspected after the final interaction between Aniq and Detective Danner, Richardson will return as Aniq to help out with Danner's murder investigation this time around using his skills from designing escape rooms. Zoë will reportedly also offer her aid.

It currently appears as though Richardson and Chao are the only other familiar faces returning to The Afterparty aside from Haddish. While little is known about the new characters themselves, their names have also been revealed. These include Edgar (Woods), Isabel (Perkins), Grace (Liu), Travis (Hauser), Hannah (Konkle), Sebastian (Whitehall), and Vivian (Wu). Interestingly, Wu's character will share the actress' first name just like Chao. Perhaps that could suggest a similar role for Vivian in the upcoming season.

The Afterparty originally began as an idea for a movie with Miller directing and his longtime production partner Phil Lord executive producing. After a number of setbacks due to other commitments (including the surprise hit The LEGO Movie), Miller eventually decided to turn it into a miniseries, giving more of an opportunity to develop each of the characters. Featuring an all-star cast including big names like Ben Schwartz and Ilana Glazer, it looks like that was the right call, as now each of these heavy-hitters got plenty of time to shine in their own spotlight episodes. This not only developed the characters more, but allowed for each episode to be told in a completely different style.

Given the positive reception of season 1, it looks as though season 2 of The Afterparty will likely utilize the same storytelling gimmicks that made the show such a hit. It will be interesting to see where they go next.

The Afterparty is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
